thailand loves to blame foreigners for everything and i guess many other countries around the world do as well. in some ways it is being patriotic believing that ones own people are perfect and foreigners are not, which of course is a little misguided. samui locals might be better off getting upset about the massing of trash that will soon get into their ground water.

Of course they are going to blame a foreigner. IT WAS A FOREIGNER

It's just a rock, how stupid can the outraged get?  I thought it was going to be a Buddha image or the like

The name of the place also makes a difference you can climb or not. It does not mean anyone can climb all kind of penis shape. It is allowed only in certain places.

Lightbulb moment - place a sign near the "monument" in English, Mandarin, and (probably) Swedish...., No climbing the Cock Rock or you will be fined - 5000THB.

I have seen the same sign in Indonesia.

Someone mentioned protecting history, which I think is a fair comment.

Historic
famous or important in history, or potentially so.

Sacred
connected with God (or the gods) or dedicated to a religious purpose and so deserving veneration.

The chiang Mai wall is historic, a temple is sacred. A penis shaped rock is neither.

The rock is so culturally important, and an unknowing visitor climbed on it causing outrage. How about directing the outrage to the authority who's responsibility it is to maintain a sign.

Typical.

This is another small reason why tourists come to visit the places as they are interesting.

A lot of flippant comments, many of them funny, but we have no right as a visitor to decide

what is sacred or not. Th guys just a senseless idiot.

Love your comment Mr Fixit   " One dick on another"

Seems there are a lot of posters who would not be upset if people climbed all over their cars. After all I doubt that they carry a notice arround with them telling people not to do it.

"" Jirasak Wannabuan of the local authority went with other officials to the area on Monday and found that a sign forbidding climbing had fallen into disrepair.""

Perhaps if the sign was looked after people would take more heed, just saying:coffee1:

Even if perhaps they have no idea how sacred they are and they're doing wrong   ?

It's an entirely different story if someone knows how sacred they are and goes ahead anyway.

Ignorance of the law is no excuse.

An intelligent or thoughtful person might have asked first. Perhaps wondering why no one else was climbing it; or why it wasn't already covered in graffiti.

If the thing was made of soap the police would be all over it and Samui would be charged for display of an indecent object.

But it isn't made of soap and it isn't man made, neither is it the display of an indecent object.

So if somebody else isn't doing something we should think it's probably wrong   ?      Therefore it's ok to break the traffic laws because everybody else certainly does and what's graffiti got to do with it   ?

rock or not if its a culture/countrys scared site  - tourist should respect it. Given that the climber probably did not know it was a sacred place to begin with

There are many holy walls / rocks around the world....

As one poster points out, jumping on cars wouldn't be appreciated, but nobody carries a sign not to.

Most people, as Kerryd posts. used to have a sense of what's right and wrong, acceptable behavior and courtesy. Unfortunately that's been surpassed by the self entitlement, I can do anything I want, clever sod mentality that we see so often in the West.

Do you think it's ok to murder someone, as you don't see others doing it? Of course not. You know right from wrong (possibly). Do you break traffic laws? Or do you strictly follow the law taking care to learn all Thai laws so as not to infringe. The difference is context. And judgement in context is sadly lacking in many cases.

Went there with my wife many years ago.  She said she wanted to have her picture taken by the big pr*ck!  No surprise then when the photo opportunity arose she sidled alongside and linked arms with me!
