Help for a friend with dengue in Samui

Hi all,

 

I was wondering if anyone could help with suggestions for a companion or friendly person who would consider doing bed side visits as hospital? A friend of mine has been travelling through Thailand on her own and has contracted dengue and is stuck in hospital in Samui for a few weeks. She has no friends or family in the country and is a bit lonely. Has anyone got any ideas on how I could help her to find someone or a service who could spend a few hours a day with her and help with some admin (bills, flights home, etc.).

 

All suggestions are greatly appreciated!

It may be of help to mention which hospital she is in. If it's one of the hospitals near me then I can hop in every now and then. Hope your friend makes a quick and full recovery.

Had it twice. Never in my life i had so much pain. My Head exploded. Can´t do much about it, except drinking water, lots of water, lots . . .

Do NOT take Aspirin ! It thins the blood further.

Paracetamol instead.

if she has really "only" (i know) dengue, she`s raking up the bill "for a few weeks".

Nothing the Hospital could do for a few weeks. It definitely is an emergency initially, but the rest of it should be in a Bungalow at the beach.

I agree totally.  I am most of my neighbours have had it but I don't know anyone who was in hospital for more than 2-3 days.  After that you still feel totally drained but don't need medical attention just rest and fluids.

Not exactly what you are looking for as they provide people to take care of kids or clean houses but I know both of these organizations have a good reputation. If you explain what you want I am sure they can help provide friendly good English speakers to help out with visits and some admin.

Let me guess, she´s in the Hospital which name starts with the second letter in the Alphabet.

Years ago, my wife was there, diagnosed with an ovary zyst. We now know these come and go completely normal in a womans life, but they wantet to do surgery, immediately. The price: astronomical.

Didn´t do it, and my wife is still alive, and kicking . . . my butt.

Dengue can be extremely nasty - but the disease only lasts for about 5 to 7 days....one wonders why the hospital is keeping her there as it isn't a "curable" disease and should have run its course.

 

if your friend is still worried then maybe she could take a room opposite the hospital - there are some fine rooms near most of the hospitals for around 1000 baht per night.

Look if its only dengue then an alternative place to stay would be cheaper,as others have said a max of 3 days in hospital.She needs to take herself out.Maybe the poster could help here with this.

She does not need to be in the hospital.

Depends on the type of DF. If Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever (DHF) it can need an extended period in hospital.

I had experience of DHF a few years back and ended up in hospital for 5/6 days. It was only on the night before my release that the doctor was satisfied that my condition had stabilised such that Dengue Shock Syndrome had been averted. Not pleasant at all.

 

If hospital stay is advised then accept that advice. Why take any chances?
