Israel denies its aircraft harmed after air raid in Syria

JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli military struck artillery positions in Syria on Tuesday after a projectile from that country's civil war hit the Israeli-controlled part of the Golan Heights, but denied a Syrian claim that Syrian forces shot down two Israeli aircraft in the assault.

The incident was the fifth case since last week in which fighting in Syria has spilled over intoIsrael, and the first since a U.S.-Russian brokered truce went into effect at sunset on Monday to try and end Syria's war, now in its sixth year.

Israel has largely remained on the sidelines of the fighting, but has carried out reprisals on Syrian positions when errant fire previously landed in Israel.

Shortly after the air raid, Syria's armed forces claimed to have shot down an Israeli warplane and an unmanned drone along the frontier between the countries.

The Israeli military quickly denied the report, saying that a pair of surface-to-air missiles were fired at its aircraft but missed. "At no point was the safety of IDF (Israel Defense Forces) aircraft compromised," it said.

Israeli warplanes have conducted several air raids on Syrian army positions over the past weeks after stray shells hit the Israeli-controlled area. Israel is also widely believed to have carried out airstrikes on arms shipments said to be destined for the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, a close ally of the Syrian government.

Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Mideast war and the two countries have been at a state of war for decades.

There is a truce and Israel jeopardize it by attack Syria!? Israel is attacking Syria for shells landing in the Golan Heights... which is Syrian territory that Israel have occupied (not captured) sins 1967 but that is something we can't talk about because Israel is supported by US and if you blame Israel for anything then you are accused of being antisemitic!
As Russia is working with the Syrian government they should deploy S-300 to protect the Syrian airspace from foreign attackers...

What truce?

It's a complicated situation.

Israel is defending Israel.

Right next to them is this big mess Syria.

Russia may love the Syrian government and that horror show Assad, but more civilized nations don't ... how can you support a regime that has killed half a million of their own people?

Obsessive Israel demonizers wildly inflate faults of the Israeli government while at the same time excusing horrific regimes like Syria (ironically so close to Israel) not to mention their partner in war crimes -- RUSSIA.

Israel has taken military action there for specific strategic reasons such as to prevent transfer of military weapons to terrorist group Hezbollah (in Syria) an enemy of Israel.

Israel has every right to defend Israel, just as your sovereign nation does.

Sometimes that involves  proactive actions.

The illegally Occupied Golan Heights is not sovereign Israel; it is stolen land, recognized as Syrian by the UN and global community.

The Israeli war machine doing its best to inflame the situation and derail the current US-Russian brokered ceasefire. If Washington allows this to happen, then they are not serious about said ceasefire, nor peace in general in Syria. They just want Assad out regardless of the cost. No wonder Putin looks as though he is ready to break Obama's jaw.

The two knowledgeable posters would note that Israel is not even a side with regard to the supposed cease fire. The same posters, so worried about keeping the peace, somehow fail to condemn the Syrian regime for allowing these incidents.

The Israeli reaction was limited in scope and got little to do with the cease fire.

Ohh! Please stop it. Us "two knowledgeable posters", like every other poster here aint' as knowledgeable as yourself Lord Morch. Right????   Talk about the pot and the kettle.

Israel is the US greatest ally in the region. Israel don't do $hit without the US. And here they are starting more trouble, making themselves part of the problem when others are trying to fix it. Put you crystal ball down and put your glasses on.

Contrary to the emotional outburst  above, Israel often takes steps without coordinating first with the USA. Certainly localized and limited actions such as described in the OP. If the above is to be believed, then supposedly the whole thing was approved by the USA, which tries to undermine the very ceasefire it signed. Doubtless, this will appeal to some, possible of the tinfoil hat brigade.

I think the OP itself refers to similar, previous incidents. These provide a better, if more mundane, backdrop to the topic at hand.

And again, somehow no criticism with regard to the fire originating from Syria. Would have thought they'd be interested in keeping the peace and all that.

Right. Morch is BY FAR the most knowledgeable poster on the threads about the Middle East. Anyone who reads them frequently knows that.
