CHIANG MAI, 19 September 2016 (NNT) - The Department of Employment is warning that hiring foreign workers as security guards is against the law.

Chiang Mai Provincial Employment office chief Yaowapa Pibulpol said on Saturday that a number of security service companies have been employing foreign workers to work as security guards for their clients but it is illegal.

Ms. Yaowapa said that, according to the Alien Working Act, foreign workers can only be employed as laborers and domestic helpers.

She added that the Security Business Act stipulates that individuals who can work as security guards, must hold Thai nationality, acquire a 3-year license from the registrar and pass the security training program from any certified establishment.

Any foreign workers found performing the job of a security guard will be subject to a maximum jail term of five years, or a fine of between 2,000 baht and 100,000 baht, or both, while their employers will also face a maximum fine of between 10,000 baht and 100,000 baht for each foreign worker hired.

Any certified establishment. Like the bar on the corner?

I had no doubt that many condo complexes or storage wharehouses  were doing it.  cheap unskilled labor that doesn't require much oversight.

It might be better to hire foreigners for this.  Seems the local ones beat up their customers all too often! :whistling:

The penalties seem backwards. The company's should face jail and the employees a fine or nothing. A foreigner doesn't appoint themselves a job and may not know or be told by the employer nationally is not an issue.

Celeb comes to Chiang Mai from the USA, has own security. Can they use them?
