CHA-AM: -- A ten year old girl was injured when she picked up an explosive device left in front of a clothes shop in Cha-Am on Sunday morning.

The device - wrapped in plastic - was one of two found in the popular resort town by explosive experts who arrived on the scene, reported Daily News.

The girl needed nine stitches in her leg but was otherwise unharmed. She had picked up the package outside her grandparents' shop near the Santisuk intersection and tried to peel back the plastic. When she placed it down again it exploded.

A similar device was found 70 meters away. It was successfully defused and found to contain several stones and shards of glass.

Police think that the devices were discarded by a gang of neighborhood youths using them in gang battles following a local festival held in the town. They believe that the youths, seeing police checkpoints in the area, feared discovery and so left the devices in the street.

CCTV footage is being examined to track down who might have left the devices.

The ten year old, who was not named, told investigators that the device had been in front of the short "for some considerable time".

it is for this reason that people are advised not to handle packages   which cannot be identified. of course the child was not aware of such circumstance and got hurt in the process. always report abandoned parcels to the police or other competent authorities for disposal.

I wonder if TAT will let people know that gangs are using bombs against each other in Cha am and to be careful

They have a huge carport to swipe under things like this...

And if a bomb went off and killed or severely injured your grand-daughter or other family member,  you'd forgive them for leaving their bombs laying around which they have constructed only for one purpose? You aren't a social worker from the nanny state, are you, ready to say they are misunderstood, hyper-active, from a broken home etc so we must feel sorry for them?

Being hateful towards people who use bombs and leave them lying around to injure innocent kids - is OK as far as I'm concerned.

Yes, it would be preferable if they would just kill and maim among themselves.

There's a first time for everything.

Ping-pong bombs have been part of the arsenal of weapons used by rival gangs of  youthful;Thais for years.  A source tells me that this is what was in the plastic bag, which was  dumped in the shop by a young hooligan when police arrived to break up an affray at this year's September seafood festival.

One can only be thankful that the injury to the little girl who took the blast was not more serious. Hopefully, those responsible for this outrage will have learned their lesson - along with the forces of law and order, which seem incapable of controlling the huge crowds attracted to events of this kind.

Schools in morning assembly should be warning its students of the dangers of touching strange packages. Education is far more than the 3 Rs.
