‘Hands off our shorts’: Women rally in Turkey after brutal assault

ISTANBUL -- Donning shorts and defending their right to dress as they please, women’s rights advocates in Turkey have rallied in defence of a nurse, attacked on a bus in Istanbul this month by a man who reportedly said he found her clothes inappropriate.

Allowed to go free, the alleged attacker was only rearrested after an outcry on social media.

Men joined Sunday’s protest in the city.

“Of course we condemn this attack,” said Akin Ozcan Aksoy, 21.

“Such things should not be taking place. We should show the same reaction if the same were done to a woman who was covered up and not just one in shorts. But the direction our country is headed makes me think we will encounter more of these stories.”

Turkey is divided in its dress code.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the ruling AK Party he founded, their roots in political Islam, have tried to restore the role of religion in public life. They have expanded religious education and allowed the head scarf, once banned from state offices, to be worn in colleges and parliament.

Dear Erdo-Erdo-Erdogan, you lead Turkey to the dark ages not to EU membership.

I am sad for Turkey. Right wing extremists, wherever they come from, insist on putting down people they don't approve of. Yes, left wingers used to do it when they were in power. What happened to live and let live, if there is no criminal activity involved?

Good at least to see two or three men joining the ladies' protest.

God bless social media the only justice around today. It casts a true light on the Vampire politicians acting in the dark trying to destabilize us all.

So sad to see countries like Turkey  being taken further away from secularism towards religious autocracy. Iran looked like a Western society under the Shah decades ago.

Not the same Muslims. Islam is an overarching religion spanning  multi cultures sects languages peoples colors customs and cultures. The only thing they have in common is their religion and that varies hugely as well. Otherwise nothing in common with each other.
