4 students from same high school are found dead in a month

BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (AP) — The school year in one suburban New York community has started with funerals, fear and frustration.

Four teenagers from Brentwood High School on Long Island have been found dead within the past month, all suspected victims of gang violence.

On Sept. 13, the day before her 16th birthday, Nisa Mickens' brutally beaten body was found on a tree-lined street in Brentwood. A day later, the beaten body of her lifelong friend, 16-year-old Kayla Cuevas, was discovered in the wooded backyard of a nearby home. The teenagers had been inseparable and shared an interest in basketball.

Days later, police discovered the skeletal remains of 19-year-old Oscar Acosta and 15-year-old Miguel Garcia-Moran in a remote industrial area of the town. Acosta had been missing since May, and Garcia-Moran vanished in February.

Students are saying they're afraid to walk alone in their community and school administrators are warning students not to wear clothing that could risk offending vicious street thugs.

Alexis Portillo, 16, was devastated when he learned of the killings: "Like, who else is going to be next, you know?"

One Brentwood teen who wouldn't give his name, saying he feared gang retaliation, said many students are nervous.

"They don't play around. If they don't like you and if you do something to them, they will come after you," he said. "I'm not going to walk anywhere. We're definitely more cautious about that. I don't go out at night anymore."

A law enforcement official told The Associated Press that said the Salvadoran gang MS-13 is suspected, although police have not made arrests. The official was not authorized to talk publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Like many suburban areas, Long Island has become a home to street gangs. At least 30 people have been killed by MS-13 gang members on Long Island since 2010.

"There's definitely been an uptick, but we always have bad crews operating here," the official said.

In one particularly heinous killing, four MS-13 gangsters were convicted in the 2010 killing of a Long Island woman and her toddler son. Prosecutors say the mother had allegedly shown disrespect to the gang. Her child was murdered simply because he was with her.

In Brentwood, police are releasing few details about their investigation into students' deaths.

Abraham Chaparro, Garcia-Moran's stepfather, said he was last seen heading off to meet some friends. He said his stepson, who emigrated from Ecuador two years ago, liked cars, soccer and girls.

"He had a girlfriend in every corner. He was good-looking," Chaparro said. "I don't understand how this happened. It's a mystery."

A large photo of the boy smiling in a white suit and black bow tie sat at the front of a funeral home chapel as mourners paid respects this past week.

Maria Arias spent days going door to door looking for her son, Oscar, after he disappeared while reportedly going to a nearby park to play soccer.

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Timothy Sini says detectives are optimistic about arrests. A "violent known gang member" was in federal custody, he said, but the arrest papers and charges are under seal and no one is saying if that suspect is tied to any of the killings.

Last week, investigators searched a shuttered state psychiatric hospital for additional victims but came up empty.

All this leaves a community on edge.

Brentwood school officials said a freshman walking to a bus stop with a light blue T-shirt in his hand was stopped last week by a group in a car. The driver demanded the shirt, which was set on fire; the student was told not to wear that color again. Curtis Sliwa, founder of the New York City-based Guardian Angels, a neighborhood patrol group that has now started patrols in Brentwood, said blue is an MS-13 color.

School officials advised in a letter to parents that "children not wear clothing that could be considered to be gang-related."

Monique Darrisaw-Akil, assistant superintendent for secondary education, conceded that "students sometimes get involved in things that are not in their best interest or in the best interest of the school community, so we try to be as proactive, and provide interventions."

Weird that the cops are shooting black guys willy-nilly but cannot seem to find the right size bullets for the MS-13 guys.

I suspect the police have to deal with black guys all over the country but the MS-13 guys are not populated so densely.  Not that police shoot more blacks but because there are fewer MS-13.

Anyways, RIP to the victims, it is a shame that people die that way.

Salvadoran gang MS-13 is notoriously brutal and here they are in Long Island.

Killing school kids over nothing.

Does NY still use the Death Penalty ? Hope so.

No and the cops cannot stop and frisk these punks either.

Terry stops are legal and a widely used police tool.

The NYC stop and frisk program as implemented exceeded the parameters outlined in Terry decision according to  a federal judge. That decision has never been taken to the Supreme Court as the current mayor discontinued the program due to complaints it was excessively  targeting minorities in certain areas.  The curbing of the program has had no impact on the crime rate in NY city.

Just for your basic information,  Long Island where these murders happened is outside NY city.

The cops in my home town used to stop and talk to us kids all the time and if they thought we were up to no good they would check our pockets or bags and stuff. If you had a pocket knife they would take you home and see if your parents were ok with that. We had no problem with that. It was a very white town at the time though and as you well know white lives don't matter.

I'm unsure how you go from discussing your childhood in a white town to "white lives don't matter". Seems rather like a false analogy and very much like demogugary.

Again, our backgrounds seem so similar (I too grew up in a all white town where a black person could not walk on street without being stopped) but the results are so different. Maybe the problem is that populist demogugary has never appealed to me, much less convinced me it had any rational solution.

Oh no that is not similar, a black person would not have been stopped in my town, we were white and getting stopped because it looked like we were up to no good, there was not one shred of racism in my town in fact most of us kids looked up to blacks. When kids gang up they need to be watched, thats all. Maybe the demagoguery you speak of is coming from you. I would bet money that a black man never had a problem walking or driving through your town. When you see a gang of kids don't you think its a good idea to keep a good eye on them no matter their color.  IF you have a rational solution to the race issue, I sure wish you would share it with us.

To be totally honest with you I believe anybody that brings up race for any reason is racist including me and you. If you said you would like to help black people you would be saying there is a difference between the blacks and other races. Indeed there is, our difference is I know I'm racist and you think you are not.

All the Universities in the USA have a center for black studies, is that not racist. Can you imagine a center for white studies? We also have all black schools. Can you imagine an all white school. If you want to live in the past thats up to you. My forefathers were slaves too and I,m sure your were also.

Nice laws don't work with thugs like this.

The law is not geared to deal with this level of savagery.

They get a chance in life in the States from that dump San Salvador and then they cause mayhem .I can never understand this..

They severely beat the one girl to death.

This requires a level of savagery that makes them not fit for life in a community.

More ammunition for the Trumpmeister.

Sad when someone reads about this and immediately thinks about the political angle..

It suggests you are not capable of understanding what just happened to these kids.

This kind of violence does not belong in America. It needs to be stopped.  If it was an American who did this then they need to spend their life in prison. If it was a gang then they need to be dismantled and life in prision or preferably capital punishment. If they were a gang of immigrants then obviously something is wrong with the vetting process and steps need to be taken to prevent more of the same animals from entering our country.

For someone to spin this into politics is very sad.

Well I have been reading about this type of crime for years and guess what nothing is happening. Mass murders are no longer monthly weekly they are daily occasions. Nothing is done. Its the same old rehashed meaningless politico answers.  Its same old promises. I have reached the last point in the circle of grief. Sorry to say I no longer care. One does not have to spin things into politics its all politically motivated. Every facet of life is. Sorry I let my membership in the Bleeding Hearts Club lapse.

Your guess about a black man walking or driving through where I  grew up would be wrong.

According to Loewen, sundown towns existed all across American from the 1890s until about 1968—and in some cases, later. Many had signs at the city limits instructing non-white residents to get out by sundown, and a few even had a whistle or siren that sounded at dusk, signaling non-white visitors to leave.

I can confirm this was strictly enforced in late '50's to early '60's.

Universities have always had "white studies". They are called the history and English departments.

Still living in the past, History and English depts. include everybody. Do they have a Center for White studies? What would happen if they opened one? Still waiting for your logical solution too? Its getting worse all the time and I don't have a logical solution but codling criminals definitely is not the answer.  I can take you to the near west side of Chicago and drop you off to walk through there community and see how far you make it. You won't be arrested I can tell you that. Good luck with your plan. Race war soon? Maybe
