China jails officer in probe that led to execution of wrong man

BEIJING: -- China on Tuesday jailed a senior police officer for 18 years, on charges of corruption and illegal possession of guns, after he led an investigation that resulted in a teenager being executed for a murder he did not commit.

In 2014, a court posthumously acquitted Huugjilt, an ethnic Mongol who used a single name, after he had been executed for raping and killing a woman in a public restroom, a miscarriage of justice which sparked widespread public anger in China.

Another man was later sentenced to death for the crime. In February, state media said 27 people had been penalised over the wrongful conviction, most of them receiving administrative punishments.

This is a huge step forward for China, to admit wrong doing by a Police officer.

Unfortunately, the "wheels of justice to execute" a person move quickly, with no checks or balance of justice.

Do you know how many high-up Communist Party members have been executed for corruption?

Loads. Not a "huge step" at all.

This case is probably a rarity.  I'd venture 99% of imprisonments and executions under false pretenses, take place with nary a backward glance.

Well, China, like lots of other countries including Japan, depends on confessions of guilt to gain convictions.  Since most people, innocent and guilty alike, are loathe to confess to committing a crime. that pretty much guarantees that coersion will be employed. It happens in the USA too all too often. Remember the case of the Central Park Five?

Or a minor abberation?

In China data on the executions is considered a state secret. But Amnesty International’s Secretary General Salil Shetty estimates that China executes as much as the rest of the world.
