CHIANG RAI, 28 October 2016 (NNT) – Officials in San Sai subdistrict of Chiang Rai province have unearthed an inscription commemorating His Majesty the King’s visit to the area over 50 years ago.

A backhoe tractor was deployed to an area next to the entrance of Wat San Sai Luang in San Sai subdistrict, Mueang district, Chiang Rai, to dig up an object residents claimed to be an old artifact. The excavation resulted in the discovery of a three-tiered hexagonal concrete slab which carries a carved message on the top, saying His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit visited the people of San Sai subdistrict on Tuesday, March 11, 1958 at 4:45 pm.

The abbot of Wat San Sai Luang stated that the historical object was produced by a former abbot two years after the royal visit.

Meanwhile, Mr Kasem Kuldee, mayor of San Sai subdistrict, said he was only seven years old and his father was a village headman at the time of the King’s visit. He recalled that throngs of local residents came out to greet His Majesty, adding that the memory is still fresh in his mind.
