Rear Disc Brakes

Check with your local 4x4 modifiers. You should be able to do it.

You might be able just to bolt up the rear disc brakes from a land cruiser prado onto your rear axle. You can shop for the parts at a salvage yard.

You could also check to make sure the proportioning valve is functioning properly on your drum brakes.

And you could change the automatic proportioning valve for a manual proportioning adjuster.

Also the self adjusters might not be working correctly.

if the discs have been grooved/damaged there's not much you can do other than replacement...there's a minimum material thickness required to dissipate the heat. With drum brakes you could turn them once and still have them perform but there is less margin with discs...

What basis do you use when you say the drum brakes are woeful? What are the symptoms and problems? I'd suggest that you look beyond blaming the rear drums.

Agreed, the drums should be quite capable of locking the rear wheels (if you don't have ABS) with a typical Farang load in the bed (empty). Disks are unlikely to provide an improvement.

Look at the adjusters and load sharing valve as a starting point.

I don't think I've ever seen a truck here with rear disc brakes; the drums are standard just as they are on many of the less expensive cars. Even with a fully loaded bed the drum brakes should be good enough to stop within a reasonable distance. There's a tradeoff though; disc brakes are more expensive to manufacture which drives up their purchase price. However, they're easier to service which means less money spent on labor. Drum brakes are easier/cheaper to manufacture but harder to service due to all the little springs in there. At least labor is cheaper here than in the West.

You can get major modifications done here pretty reasonably.

I've got a highly modified old Land Rover and I wanted to put in a locker and rear dics.

I had a set of nissan axles under it.

I ended up buying a set of axles from a Lancruiser Prado. The axles came with a locker in the rear, dics and all the coil springs. So I'll end up with coil springs too. All for under 100K including parts and labor.

Yeah check out what the problem is with your drums, going to disks is extream, I have disks on the back of my pickup (strada/grandis) but in all honesty when braking I would never know the diference compared to a good drum brake, only on prolonged high speed braking would I see a diference and were talking pickup here not Farrari !
