Good Thai Restaurants in Bangkok

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I will be in Bangkok next January and are preparing my trip.  I would highly appreciate if somebody could give me adresses of good Thai Restaurants.

I am not interested in trendy or tourist places !!!!!- Prefer to go to places where I can enjoy tasty, real thai  food !

Thanks in advance for your replies.

That's a bit vague Peter....there are good Thai restaurants all over Bangkok.

If you are in the Sukhumvit area I like Ruan Derm on Soi 22....excellent spicy curries.

I quite like Lean on Tree in Soi 18. Also Khing Klao on Soi 20 for Northern Thai food. Both have a nice atmosphere to. The former outside and the latter inside.

Not brilliant I'd say. But good enough and convenient for Soi 20. Will give Ruan Derm a try

Problem is, Bangkok is so big these could be miles away from where you'll be.

There is a northern Thai place just before Ruan Derm on Soi 22 as well but I wasn't a fan after my one visit.

Just for info...others may like it more.

A little soi behind Asoke bts. It's a largish out door place lots of thai office workers and farang eat there, maybe some one can chime in with the name, cheap authentic..

You said REAL Thai food. You won't find that in trendy restaurants.  You will find that in street stalls, and food courts. I personally enjoy going to office buildings which have food courts. Great food. REAL Thai food that the Thai's eat every day. Prices are dirt cheap. I am typically the only foreigner because the tourists don't check the office buildings, and I love it. Great food. Try it.

Right around Sukhumvit Soi 1, there is a long line of street stalls under the highway. There you will find real Thai food.

I wouldn't agree that the only REAL Thai food is to be found in food courts, street stalls and office blocks. Real Thai street food sure. There are are plenty of Thais with money able to afford to go to classier places than that to eat Thai food. Fine if you want to sit at a plastic table and pay 50 baht a dish. If you want something a bit more up market and sophisticated there are plenty around serving REAL Thai food.

Not sure about Ruan Derm. Went to Soi 22 to try find it. Walked down 22 until you can turn right to cut through to 20. Checked the small side Sois too. Couldn't see a Rooan Derm. There was one called Reuan Maliga and another one called something Derm (I forget now) up a small Soi near the little enclave of bars (Rumours etc) but no Ruan Derm??? Checked Google, Trip Advisor and Waze too. No joy.

That is odd as its directly opposite the bar complex.

I've not been down that way for a few months so I hope its not another Thai restaurant lost to modernisation.

^^^ Yeah he makes good money out of it too.

He highly rates Soei restaurant facing the Phaya Thai station at the end of the airport rail link, he was there with Andrew Zimmern when he was filming for series 7 of his show.

Zimmern said out of a bunch of dishes they had, 6 were the best he had tried of that particular dish.

I'll go look again tomorrow. Might be one of those things where we were looking too hard in the wrong part of the Soi.

Funnily, before going there we were planning to go to the cafe on the corner - Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf. Doors closed and no sign of life at about 9:30. Normally open every day from 7:00. Not sure if it was a one off closure OR whether the same company that's taking over Bangkok Betty, to turn it into a steak restaurant (apparently), have taken over that premises too.

All good shopping centres anywhere in Thailand have good food halls,Siam Paragon certainly does and the Central chain also.Different stalls doing specialities like Pad Thai,Som Tam,Pad Krapow,Moo Daeng etc. and it's generally locals, very few foreigners even in Siam Paragon.

I'd like to recommend a small but great cafe/restaurant in Silom. It's called Tealicious. It's in a small soi opposite Lebua State Tower. The food is a mixture of Thai and western. Both are of excellent quality, as are the staff. Check out their facebook page for more information. As I said, it's small, so it's wise to book in advance.

I just had this delicious lunch at Ploenchit food court for 60 baht. Thai friends said I paid too much.  :shock1:

They are right. The soup is probably 1baht but the rest looks about 30 baht.

To the OP, please define good Thai food.

Do you mean Northern, Southern, or Issan food?

Or would you rather have farang poncified central food?

Bear in mind the gaeng kiaw wan you have at some place on Suk will bear no resemblence to whats sold in the foodcourt of Big C or your local market.

These are my favorites at the moment:

- For something special: The Local in Soi 23. A bit more expensive (still affordable though), but awesome food, and some dishes I never saw anywhere else before (apparently is must be somewhat traditional Thai food). Also love the interior design.

- For Pad Thai: Thip Samai. Ab institution in Bangkok. Make sure you take some orange juice as well.

- For the river view: Khinlom-Chom-Sa-Phan. Only the music band can be too loud sometimes.

- For seafood: Streetfood in Chinatown in the evening.

- For Isaan food: Som-tum-nua in Siam Square or Kum-Poon in Central World.

- For the local experience: Any moo-ka-ta that is good. I like the one on Petchburi Road near Italthai pier.

- For open air with live music: Baanrie Cafe on the corner of Sukhumvit and Soi Ekkamai.
