All water safety at piers and landings are set for Loy Krathong celebrations

BANGKOK:-- Officials of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) yesterday reinspected all river and canal piers under its responsibility in wake of stepped up safety for passengers before the people celebrate the upcoming Loy Krathong festival.

The celebration of the festival will begin today until Monday for some provinces of tourist destinations, while for Bangkok, the celebration will begin Monday.

The checking of the safety of the piers came as a boat passenger misstepped and fell into Klong Saen Sap and drowned after jumping off the boat while it was about to dock at a pier in Bangkok.

Security at Bangkok’s boat piers is a pressing matter with the looming Loy Krathong festival on November 14 which will see higher crowd numbers at these locations.

The BMA is coordinating with the Marine Department and private passenger boat operators to establish safety protocols to prevent passengers from slipping and falling into the water.

Incorrect; the video clearly shows that the boat driver had no intention of mooring at the dock but simply swerved in at reduced speed to allow passengers to jump off.
