Not being too tech savvy, i am lost in this case.

I have been travelling and staying in various hotels where they give you a complimentary wi fi voucher.

I can never access this and have to use tethering off my mobile ph which works well enough, but how do i access the free hotel  wi fi ?

The indicator is there for the ### hotel on my PC so i click on it and it says connected, but a small indicator shows a problem.

No pop up appears on screen where you put in the given 'user name and password".

It just does not appear no matter what i do, so i can not log on.

Presuming its a simple fix, but too much for me.

Any ideas please?

Was told it was possibly my anti virus blocking it, but tried it after uninstalling avast, and still no luck

by tethering, I assume you are doing 3G, and going usb/or via the phone's hotspot, to the laptop?

and you have tried the smartphone on the free wifi? , then by usb to the laptop?

and you have taken the whole kit and caboodle down to the concierge, and tried comparing another laptop of theirs, to yours?

Sounds like you are alone in your travels, but if not:

Get your mate to download 'virtual wifi router' , to turn his (hopefully) working laptop into a hotspot for you

Try this...

Click on the connection in the wifi list and select delete or forget.

Then connect again to hotel wifi.

Then try to access the net via a browser...you should then be prompted to login to hotel wifi.

The 'connected but there is a problem' means you are connected but havent yet entered the wifi key....

Open your browser after connecting to the WiFi and type any URL (does not matter, "google.com"). Normally now a webpage of the network will open with further informations.

If the above does not work:

I had a similar problem and used

192.168.1.1

in the browser address line.

This redirected to the router homepage where you enter your login data.

The router actually was not on 192.168.1.1 but on 192.168.10.1 but it worked.

(of course you have to be connected to the WiFi first to do so)

This is a common irritation for me too.

The quickest fix for me is to launch a different browser (Chrome, Firefox etc) and try to connect to any random URL.

Invariably one of them will be successfully redirected to the logon page.

Addons that stop pop-ups and ads can cause this issue so if you really need those then install another browser that you don't use for anything else.

If you are trying to connect via your browser, make sure you aren't using a VPN like Browsec or Hotspot Shield. It needs to connect to the local gateway, which is a Private IP address not a public one.

(Added: Once you've logged in you can turn it back on again).

Thanks to all for the info given..tried all advice that i could comprehend, but failed.

Took it to an "expert" who dug deep and found a problem in some or other settings.

Now happily logged in to a  hotel wi fi.

Mods please close this thread after a happy ending was achieved..
