A few years back the government were selling official vehicle plates with picture backgrounds for each province.

Anyone know if they are still available and how much they cost?

Note, these are not the wrappers that you can apply to standard plates, which are illegal, these are officially issued plates from the LTA.

Yes still available. They are bought at auction. They are not normally offered for sale on run of the mill numbers.

Enquire at your local LTO.

If you want a 'particular' number you can ask to see the list of future available numbers at the LTO. You can 'bag'  about a month before issue. No pretty picture on the plate though.

Apparently we needed the same 'lucky' numbers on our cars...just different squiggles in front.

Price for a not too special number, with pretty picture,  won't be much more than a couple of days pay to you ☺☺☺

You can also get special license plate numbers at no additional cost. These are obviously not the easy to remember numbers the HiSo people like (1234 or 8899 etc). But if you like e.g. 137 you can get it at no extra cost. Check the website of the LTO.

I've never understood the attraction of these 'vanity plates' or 'cherished numbers' (what a ridiculous name!!) as they're known in UK.

The only number plate I've ever actually seen 'in the flesh' that was in the slightest way interesting was "8008 MAN" from the Isle of Man.

I'm not really interested in specific numbers (Wifey may be of a different opinion) but I just fancied the nice backgrounds, sadly cannot :(

You can get picture overlays for the regular plates, but depending upon the mood of the traffic cops they are illegal under "modifying the registration plate".

If you remember a few years back there were issues with plate production and the black paint on the letters fell off, people who re-painted their plates we nicked for the same offence.

So this is illegal? I guess with a police sticker it would be OK to have one of this type.

I believe the tag holders like that are OK so long as you don't have to cut the plate and it doesn't obscure the seal.

But, it's all down to how thirsty the cop is on the day :(
