Government drive urges foreign tourists not to buy fake goods

BANGKOK: -- THE COMMERCE MINISTRY has solicited the support of foreign embassies to launch a “Stop Fake Goods” campaign targeting travellers, while the government says it will stringently inspect traders for counterfeit goods |and examine their tax-payment history.

Thosapone Dansuputra, director-general of the ministry’s Intellectual Property Department, said that in the new year it would strongly urge travellers not to purchase counterfeit goods, in order to ensure that Thailand gets away from its bad reputation for trading of such items.

“The department will join hands with foreign embassies in Thailand to warn each country’s travellers not to buy fake goods during their visits in Thailand, as it is illegal. The government will also set up billboards in many tourist-attraction spots and notable areas to warn shoppers and traders not to buy or sell fake goods,” he said.

........while foreign companies urge Thailand not to produce and sell fake goods!..

The junta is helping the unemployment situation by allowing such goods to be produced but it doesn't mean people, especially tourists, should be buying them

Don't want any damage to the country's image, do we ?

It’s the tourists fault! What was I thinking, Doh.  The Government is unable or unwilling to police it’s own country so all responsibility will be transferred to the tourists.  If there is a problem with counterfeit goods, it is the tourists fault, not the country's.

It makes perfect sense    :D

whats next? stop and search on departure? 10K fine for each Superdry t-shirt without a valid reciept? idiocy

You've hit on another money making idea !

Make money selling these goods then make money fining the tourists who buy them plus seizure of course so the items can be re-sold.

Ignore the people who make and sell counterfeit goods because they're actually helping the national economy. I would say because they're Thai too but that would just outrage some members.

i could provide the authorities with list of vendors selling illegal good right now.

such a pity the RTP doesn't have a crime stoppers scheme, as exists in other countries, whereby citizens can be rewarded for assisting the authorities in crime fighting by advising them of illegal activity. i'd be a rich man.

First thing they need to do is stop selling the fake goods. Then people would not buy them.

Second thing is to reduce the tariff on the real stuff so people would start buying them.

Third thing is to now find jobs for all they unemployed sellers

Fourth thing is that none of this is ever going to happen so stop worrying about it

Hilarious. They allow the production and the importation of fake goods but blame foreigners for buying them.

Of course it's still OK for corrupt customs officials to allow the importation of knock-off auto parts from China and to allow official dealers to install them in unsuspecting motorists cars in the hope they malfunction and kill some people. Why not urge foreigners not to ride in vehicles with fake parts too? That must do inestimable damage to Thailand's reputation.

Foreigners should also also be careful not to cause further damage the nation's precious reputation for honesty by refraining from buying any goods or services from Thai businesses that use fake computer software.

Damn those pesky foreigners.

If not for them there would be no problems.
