Canada blocks sale of defence equipment to Thailand

Jon Grevatt, Bangkok - IHS Jane's Defence Industry

OTTAWA: -- Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs Stéphane Dion has recently blocked the sale of military equipment to Thailand, the Canadian government has confirmed to IHS Jane's.

A spokesperson for Global Affairs Canada (GAC) - the government department that oversees the country's foreign relations and trade - did not provide details about the type of equipment that was barred from sale but said the value was "modest".

The spokesperson indicated that the sales ban was decided on a case-by-case basis and that it was a response to Canada's concerns about Thailand's human rights record.

I can't commend those who made the decision enough.. But the sad truth is that China will be more than willing to step in and fulfill the order and throw a few kickbacks on the top for some undesirable add on that only benefits China..

The value of the sale was modest , not much to go on , however any sale of military equipment to places like Cambodia, Thailand, Lao , Burma, you're dealing with the unpredictable, however the tanks and subs are coming from China , that's a worry , perhaps with the help of outsiders, the students should continue to use their key boards , that way they won't get flattened by a tank........................................:coffee1:

Yes, but one has to act ethically if one wants to live with one's self.  The junta has already got into bed with China.  Getting out will be the hard part.

Thanks my initial comment was to be Trudeau government making insignificant blips to look good, but that article makes it look more like  just following his earlier lifestyle with mother Maggie chanting "ban the bomb'". Whereas Harper just wants everybody to love him for his piano playing and singing of let it be.

So when does a rogue country become the business of other countries ? When they start to look and act like North Korea ? Or is it not wise to prevent countries from becoming rogue ? Thailand has contravened a number basic human right, civilians trailed in military courts, arrest without warrants, the use of S44 the LM law and the computer crimes act. If the present government is allowed to continue on their way without friends like Canada saying that they believe Thailand is on the wrong road the country will be the next N. Korea. Friends warn each other if they think they act incorrectly.

I wonder which of the two official languages the minister used to send his "naughty naughty" letter to announce the "modest" pullback of resources.  Was it in French or English?

Or maybe it was in one of the two unofficial languages:  Mandarin or Arabic?

Maybe the sale of the weapons contravened Sharia Law?

Thailand will just buy from China or Russia instead, countries which don't give a hoot about human rights.

Canada doesn't give a hoot about human rights either.  They have a $15 BILLION dollar contract with Saudi Arabia to provide them with 1000 armoured fighting vehicles that Saudi Arabia will be using not only to repress domestic dissent, but to wage war in Yemen.   Canada only cares about money and politics,  just like the US.  Thailand's government is on the globalist sh*&list, so they get turned down despite rights abuses not being even in the same league as Saudi Arabia

I read a bit earlier it was about shotguns!

Maybe the alarm bells started ring when LOS tries to buy up all stocks of the Adlers,

as they are becoming harder to sell to western countries,

as they are are choice rapid fire weapon suitable for massacres

So they bought 500 12gauge shotguns for the border police. But I do wounder when they will put a ban on sale of defense equipment to US where the police kill more civilians a year than the Thai army has killed the last 10 years!

Since there isn't a war going on, the Thai army shouldn't have killed anyone in the last 10 years.

The USA is so politically correct, it doesn't even have a national language...god forbid that anyone is offended by Americans speaking English...

Fail to see the relevance. Canada is to small to even be a traffic director forget about policeman. I must admit that Canada has their nose up well you know. They made the mistake of directing all their trade energy in one direction and consisting mostly of energy. Canada wake up its a whole big wide world out there. Diversify trade with others. How could politicians <deleted> one of the best countries in the world? Just the word politicians should give one the answer.
