Most of the innovative independent channel's output will be available online for up to 30 days after initial transmission, with downloads costing from 99 pence (1.46 euros, 1.95 US dollars) per programme.

The service covers all of the channel's home-produced shows commissioned since June, plus a substantial portion of its archives, as well as some imported programmes such as US hit series "Desperate Housewives."

Some movies will also be available, costing 1.99 pounds per download. Under the terms of the service, the downloaded programmes will remain watchable for two days after they are first viewed.

After that, they will automatically be erased from the computer or other hard drive on which they are stored.

The service is aimed at competing with cable and satellite broadcasters such as Sky, as well as telecoms giant BT's new BT Vision service, which offers on-demand shows and films without having to pay a monthly subscription.

Hey some good news at last... now you can download legally all your fave Channel 4 shows here.

Unfortunately:-

A It's not free

B You must be resident in the UK or Eire

I've not tried it yet from here (Netherlands) but I bet they're using an IP filter to stop overseas connections, time to fire up the proxy :o

It seems that this is not usable outside of the UK/Eire - probably looks at IP address to determine that. Perhaps a better alternative is to install a digital Freeview card which will give you all of the free to air channels - you need to register this via ORB.
