Float switch compatibility to pump

Featured Replies

I have possible problems with a new float switch and although it seems to be back working now, the guy who came to fix it said it won't last long because of the 2hp pump. He reckons (he said all) float switches are only compatible to up to 1hp pump.

Strange as the old float switch was good for about 10years.

The new one (2 months old) looks like this

Yellow blue float switch

He said an additional electric box is necessary to make it last longer. Strange as the new tank and float switch was only installed 2 months ago and nothing said then.

So any thoughts on whether I need a different kind of switch to work with a 2hp pump or maybe I really do need the electric box?

If that's the actual switch (or a local one good for 15A) then it will be just fine on a 2HP pump.

We have a similar one (from HomePro and a lot less than $75) controlling our 2HP river pump, it's been working just fine for 4 years or so.

If the switch you have is rated at 10A or less you should use a contactor (that's the "extra box").

EDIT How often does it switch the pump? If more than 2 or 3 times a day I would add the contactor anyway to extend the life of the switch.

Thanks I will see how it goes and ask them for the details on the switch if any more problems.

It fills up the tank about 4-5 times per day.

Many thanks for the info !
