Military and local authorities clamp down illegal hotel business on Hua Hin beach

HUA HIN:-- Encroachment of Hua Hin beach for over a decade to build houses and buildings and later converted to hotel accommodations for tourists is now no longer allowed to continue after local district and military authorities started to get tough with such illegal operations that not only affect legal hotel operations but also affect tourism industry.

The move by authorities was aimed to regulate illegal hotel business that operators not only encroached the beach but also had no hotel licence.

Without proper licensing, they lack safety.

Authorities have earlier estimated that about 60 per cent of hotel rooms throughout the country are operating illegally.

They said most of these illegal hotels are in tourist destinations such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Hua Hin, Pattaya, and Phuket.

. . . about 60 per cent of hotel rooms throughout the country are operating illegally.

Not just hotel rooms, but all sorts of "tourist" venues, massage parlours, bars, restaurants - you name it.

The "black economy", of which this sector is a substantial part, is said to contribute up to 60 per cent of GDP.

Is the present regime, wrestling with a ship of state which if not sinking is certainly listing badly, prepared to blow another hole in the superstructure by closing down all these illegal operations?

If so, as well as relieving countless Thais of a living and creating a beds famine which will damage the tourist trade, will they take action against all those officials who have taken backhanders to look the other way or simply turned a blind eye to what has been going on?

Don't hold your breath.

"Without proper licensing, they lack safety.".....sure...!

Haven't been in one here in 7 years. Stayed in one in Bangkok when I arrived here the rates were good and I loved looking at myself in all the mirrors.

Mirrors  on ceiling, no doubt :)

This is such BS. All for show.

Rememberr how the beaches were to be cleared of sunbeds and restaurants? Well it is impossible to walk along  parts of the beach now the restaurants and beaches have taken so much of the land. One of them  even has signs stating that access to the beach is reserved for the restaurant customers only.

HOw about the obnoxious kite sailing businesses? They have taken over whole stretches and forbid  visitors from sitting on the beach near their operations.  All of these businesses operate  with the knowledge of local officials. The question one should ask the mayor and provincial regulators is how this is allowed, when it was supposedly stopped?

As they say in the oil business you would only strike another dry hole.
