Walls or Roof 1st

Featured Replies

Any suggestions, pros & cons of one before the other?

They were going to do are roof 1st but out of nowhere are sending the brick crew out.

Thanks!

By far not enough info to help.

Foundation and drainage arrangements 1st.

Sorry Kwaski. Footings, columns, floors are all done. Roof was supposed to go up next, according to plan anyhow. We've been on hold for it through the holiday & today they got the brick crew out there. In my case it doesn't really matter now which is the best way to do it, they hit the ground running & they're up to several of the lower window beams now. But for the sake of knowledge, I'd appreciate what opinions there are on it. I see new construction around & they seem to do it either way. Some run the walls up first & some are welding up trusses and putting the roof on first.

Thanks!

It doesnt matter here.

the reason they usually put the roof on first is because it offers rain/sun protection during the longer masonry period.

In the west all the masonry is loadbearing so you have to build the walls before the roof can sit on it.

if they want to send the brickies in early then its no detriment, maybe your steel is out of stock or they are awaiting his roofing team to finish another job.

its good that they are prepared to adapt and keep the job moving.

That's what a friend said "the masonry crew doesn't want to work in the sun", while he was laughing. Thought he was joking.

Thanks Eyecatcher!

I would prefer to get the roof on first as once it goes on there "may be" some movement in the columns due to the weight, it would be a small movement but could cause some cracking.

At the end of the day not a showstopper, but would be my preference, would also keep sun off "cement" being used to lay walls and allow it to dry a little slower.

yes i would go roof first then walls as the need to brick up to steel as said there may be slight movements when steel is added
