2 passports, 2 nationalities, one work permit. How to travel ?

Featured Replies

Hi, I hope someone can help me. I have 2 citizenship (Brazilian and Italian). My work permit is in my Brazilian passport but I need to go to the US and they require a visa and it's quite hard to get as a Brazilian citizen. Previously I always entered the US with my Italian passport. Can I still do that here? Would the Thai immigration create a problem? I don't know where or who to ask this question. I've tried lawyers but I only know foreign ones. I don't really trust to ask the Thai immigration, as I have in the past and I had a lot of problem because apparently no one communicate there, so I can't trust their answers. I hope someone can offer me some help here. Thanks in advance.

Check in at the airline counter with Italian passport that does not require US visa. Exit Thai immigration with Brazil passport that you entered Thailand with. Enter US with Italian Passport.  Reverse process when coming back to Thailand.

I can see not problem with entering the US on your Italian airport.

Leave Thailand on your Brazilian passport and enter the US on the Italian passport. Then leave using the Italian passport and enter here on the Brazilian passport.

It is important that the airline check in uses the Italian passport as they will not issue boarding pass if passport presented does not allow entry in USA. Also this is passport data sent to US authorities for checking prior to landing in US.

Guys, Thank you SO much for the replies! I really appreciate them.

My concern is, in fact, on my way back. I won't have any stamp on my Brazilian passport and THAT's why I'm concerned.

Would I have any problem with my work permit? The Thai Immigration won't see any stamp from anywhere.
For my Italian passport, I have been traveling to the US with it for the last 20 years and I never had a problem, but I didn't have any work permit in my Brazilian passport so i never faced this situation before.
Does anyone know if I would have any problem with the work permit?

Thank you so much!

Many countries don't stamp in or out, you should have no issues re-entering.

Don't forget to get a re-entry permit if you are on an extension of stay.

Thanks a lot! I've way too many bad experiences with Thai immigration so I just want to avoid any foreseeable problems :|

One point, never, ever show both your passports to an immigration official (anywhere). Just show immigration the passport you wish to use at that time.

Check-in agents may want to see the passport with your Thai visa (I've had that happen, no problem whatever).

OK!! I never did that, but that's a very good advice :)

I love this forum! I should've come earlier here....

Don't forget that if you're travelling on your Italian Passport you still need to apply online for an Electronic Travel Authorisation, without you won't be able to board the aircraft.

Use the official site https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/esta/ which will cost US$14 rather than one of the commercial websites which can cost a lot more, probably in the region of $85.

I really appreciate all the help, tips from everyone!
