Racism, anger and why dual pricing makes sense to Thai people

I don't think you understand what I'm saying. You seem to think that one person refusing to pay is not going to affect the tourist attractions in question; I'm merely pointing out that it's not just one person and it may well affect them in the long run. What you choose to do with your money is of course your own business but I've seen some of the tourist attractions that practise double pricing and trust me, I'm quite sure I'm not missing out on anything. It's a big old world and there are plenty of other places to visit outside of this country.

My point was that the individual misses out the most, after all, it is only a few grumpy expats who won't pay, the millions of tourists do without question, there is no big boycott movement happening, just a few expats using it as an excuse to do even less with their time in Thailand.

Thais increase prices because they are greedy opportunists. The Japanese offer incentives to encourage tourism. Japan is an expensive country to visit for some.

Having said that, my posting before Thailand was Japan. I place the Japanese quite high on my racist list.

Thais offer incentives to encourage local tourism, if you look at it as foreigners pay the full amount while Thais get a discount, you will see there is no difference at all.  That was how it was presented to me in India where they do the same.

'...makes sense to Thai people': Thai people and, even common, sense... Hard to associate, isn't it? ...While 'the system' does everything it can, for centuries, using all of its, extended, powers, to des-educate the Thais from kindergarten age on, to eliminate any sense, common or other, from the brains of its victims(!)... I do love, and respect, 'small', poor, real-Thai, coutry-side people, so much goodness, generosity, honesty in them, 'the system' didn't succeed in brainwashing away from them! But, as things are today, I couldn't honestly write a sentence with '...makes sense to Thai people', alas, alas.

Ultimately, Thailand will not feel the loss from you choosing not to visit one of the tourist attractions with dual pricing, but you might.

'Shawn0000': 'There is no worst blind than the one who doesn't want to see', the principial aspect seems to escape you totally: for a country pretending to(!) be welcoming for tourists (the 'Thai smile' and the rest of the bull, you know) as opposed to charging, not just double, eventually, but many times times the price of a ticket for a Thai, is just, plain, hypocrisy, on top of greed, and when any proof needed for local racism and xhenophobia, this might be the one.

Making how many Trillions of Baht with tourism? 'Tourists will always come to Thailand, tourists love Thailand', ah yeah, wait and see, the more so when you go on like that!

If it is not racist to offer foreigners a discount in Japan while Japanese pay the full amount then how can it be racist to offer Thais a discount in Thailand while foreigners pay the full amount?

The discount in japan is to foreigners who buy something then leave the country with it IE vat free as you do not live there so not libel for tax its exported

Most countries do the same

Try charging two prices in the UK or Europe like Thais do HERE and you my friend will go to jail

Why

Its called racialism and those in the real word will not accept it

I would love to see you in a shop or market in the UK and see you try that on as trading standards and police would have you banged up in hours

No matter what color, creed or religion you are there are standards you must attain in civilized countries

Unlike Thailand that's why the lights are dimming in this country

Funny, doesnt seem to be putting people off visiting the Taj Mahal, it's still packed despite the 1000% higher price for non Indians, in fact neither does it seem to be putting off the tourists in Thailand, visited Erawan or Khao Yai recently?  Both horribly full of tourists who happily paid the higher fees, the only people left outside grumbling are the expats, it really doesn't effect tourism at all other than generating more revenue from them.  But ok, let's wait and see if this dual pricing, which has gone on for some time already, has an effect on Thai tourism, I very much doubt it but we will see.

Never had a problem with dual prices outside of the scumbag areas areas of BKK, Pattaya and pu-ket?. as in the rest of the country they want the trade and know they will loose it if they over charge. My wife who is Thai came up with a way of beating them anyway when shopping and she wants to buy something, the code word of walkon is delivered and she does the buying while I walk up the road. saved loads that has.

She recently said she was ashamed of her country now as its very racist among other comments one really shocked me.

I quote

The lights are going out fast here in Thailand with the tourists and locals who do live abroad, lets not visit again.

sad but true and that is why we said good bye to a country we both loved even though it is the most racialist country in the world as far as the ATM & scams goes

Can you please give examples of the dual pricing in the "scumbag" areas of Bangkok and Pattaya.

I have spent much time in both places, presumably including what you think of as "scumbag" areas and am genuinely unaware of dual pricing.

While you are at it please list the "scumbag" areas.

I was referring to the discounted rail tickets for tourists not reclaiming VAT.

Many countries have dual pricing, Switzerland is one in Europe, there is nothing racist about offering nationals a different price to non nationals, basically because it is done regardless of race.

One thing is for sure - the dual pricing does engender much bad feeling.

13 days ago  I started this thread:

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/961492-how-can-newbies-to-thailand-avoid-paying-farang-prices/

and it received 131 posts.

I wrote the OP because I'd seen many references to "the farang price" in many posts on different topics while reading  TV forums.

This thread is receiving equal attention.

There have probably been many similar threads previously in TV.

There is the article that the OP cited in this thread as another example of interest in this topic.

Obviously the dual pricing is upsetting to many.

Nobody likes to feel they've been taken advantage of or been cheated in some way.

no is the answer mate

we are civilized, understanding and helpful and although some of our politicians a mad I Think we do let you vote your way

Trust me charging tourists fees to enter attractions that maybe multiple times more than the fees for Thai visitors or even free for Thais, does have an affect on Thailand`s tourist industry. They may get bitten once, but twice then they soon catch on. Tourists will go home and spread the word. They may be able to squeeze the golden goose, but through greed they are killing off completely.

Dual pricing has existed for a long while and ever since tourist numbers have increased and revenue has increased, your assertion is not based on any resemblance of fact.

Ok, so your problem is not the official dual pricing but actually your ignorance of the barter system leaving you unable to get a good price in a shop, right?  Its not that hard, they say a price, you say a lower one, they may then try somewhere in the middle and you can do the same, got it?

By the way, the lights are not going out, it has improved no end in the 17 years I have known Thailand.

Alright, so firstly your entire message adds up to less than 300B of 'storage'. It's actually logged as an SQL entry to be called when the page is viewed. Don't present pseudo-knowledge as a mask for laziness, you just look bad.

Secondly, I'd like to know where the people experiencing the dual-pricing are living? I'm considering moving to Thailand, Chiang Mai specifically. A lot of people seem to be hovering around the Bangkok and Pattaya regions, curious to see if other people have experienced this in areas significantly further away than the capital. Chiang Mai is pretty tourist-y but from what I've read on it, it seems to be a different beast entirely.

Its actually the kind of logic someone uses when they would rather see the attraction then protest against a sytem they don't actually disagree with anyway.  I happily pay the little extra and I get to see the most incredible bits of Thailand, your loss not theirs, trust me.

You appear to be the Thai Visa apologist for this appalling practice?

I think the rest of the world should also apply dual pricing to Thais ... an extra 20% onto the price if you are Thai ... just to even things out.

Racist or not, IMHO any Thai family supported be a farang makes them all non Thai as far as price gouging is concerned. They are the lucky lotto winners so have money to burn!  If we are in a market and my wife sees something I like, I continue walking and she makes her purchase.

When we get work done on her house, I stay well out of the way whilst the job is priced and agreed.  Sometimes there is a look on the workman's face that says Sh1t, I'd have charged more if I'd known!

Yep, my wife tells me to move away  or stay in the car whilst she shops also.  She gets so annoyed when she is charged more simply for being married to a non Thai.
