LMAO! the only Thais eating there are hookers and stall holder's, cab drivers and motorcycle taxis and I could give a flying <deleted> about them !

Flying <deleted>, kind of like that. Brings up this picture of pompous mc zipping over Suk like Superman except with a beer belly, skinny buns and a giant hardon.

In addition to the fact the all the people you mention are hustling for a buck like the rest of us there are the employees of the late night venues, late shift workers, hundreds of them, regular folks, service staff, who sit down for a bite before heading home.

But you've missed the point completely. Thais want there streets back! The elderly and disabled want room to move.
Citizens deserve a modern bangkok. The time for that has started and farang can buggers off to Cambodia if they want real 3rd world

You seem to think that these food stalls all serve foreigners.... their customers are almost completely Thais.... (with the exception of some stalls near Nana or Soi Cowboy).  The place I get breakfast from (further back), I am surprised when I see a foreigner there (maybe once a month or something)....  although I do see the odd foreigner looking once in a while then continuing on past because they don't know how to order (made to order).  The places near the entrance during the day, pretty much almost all are Thais who come down at lunch to eat.... Some from 7/11, some from local restaurants, some office workers, but even in an area full of foreigners.....the vast majority are locals.

At night, some of the vendors switch over and make some stuff that might have more foreigners come by and try -- but still the vast majority are local Thais.

The vast majority of affordable housing (even the new stuff) -- is what in the west would equate to what I had as a dorm room at university.  I room with a bed, a place to put a TV, and a shower room.  If you are lucky, you might have a balcony... but it is against the rules to cook on it.  Some might have a small fridge, but few have hobs for cooking... many don't have a fridge.

Your concentrating on the poorest of thais. The sky train in that area will show thousands of well dressed thais all with smart phones. They are the future of thailand and they eat in food courts and you can still get a chicken soup in T21 for 30 baht in air-conditioned comfort.
But your flogging a dead horse. The people have decided and your bashing your head against a brick wall
...it's over, nothing you can do now.

And the vast majority of working Thais, who don't have kitchens in their apartment and they don't have money to spend in more expensive restaurants etc.  But he, scr#w the locals -- as long as people who should have never left home can have the same thing here that they left in their home country.... hmmm.... so many complain about how things are here.... eventually demanding what they left.... when what they really should do is leave themselves because they obviously are not happy here.

" But hey, screw the locals -- as long as people who should have never left home can have the same thing here that they left in their home country.."

Mainly economic refugees who were unable to make it at home, feel trapped & homesick for what they really never had and now want to sterilize the world to suit their unimaginative need for bland uniformity.

I'm sure you've garnered a lot of feedback from Thais generally as well as specifically Thai elderly & disabled ... or maybe you feel best qualified to decide what they want ... a sort of farang mother  knows best civic view.

I prefer uncluttered streets and rip off merchants selling cheap crap at the roadside.

The street bars were a bloody nuisance - attracting all kinds of low-end flotsam at all hours of the early morning but htey weren't as bad as the hawkers selling knock-off Calvin Klein underwear.

Total thugs they were and glad to see them gone.

VW buses on soi 11 total nightmare - blocking the pavement, forcing people using the hotels and restaurants to walk on the street where they'd invariably get clipped by motosais and tuk tuks racing up and down the soi like retards. Seriously dangerous.

Street vendors are what makes Bangkok what it is and makes it different from New York, London or the others. If you want order and cleanliness go to Singapore or the West. It's no wonder tourists are giving Thailand a pass.

Street vendors are not what makes Bangkok different from London or New York. You're comparing apples and pears.

Tourists are not giving Thailand a miss; certainly not from my perch here in Asoke.

There's nothing wrong with a mini condo (dorm), my wife lived in one for years and she liked it. My neighbour sleeps in one during the week, in the weekend he's in his house with his family.

See the advantage of empty sidewalks, now the old farang can easy walk to Tesco foodcourt or BigC and eat in aircon there.

Less rats in the city, less smelly filthy sidewalks, less unmannered people hanging on the streets, less trafficjam, less soidogs, all improvements because the vendors have moved.

I hope they go back to the countryside cause BKK is far too busy.

And farang who can't afford the foodcourt also better move to Cambodia or so.

Yes, the vendors are disappearing andy stomach is sad. All the young Thai need aircon so it's only a matter of time.

The food in the food courts is simply dreadful. Most mall restaurants overpriced, poor value. All that's left is the tiny, hidden restys and those being pushed out fast by rentier class.

It wasn't me who started enforcing the law. Believe it or not it was a choice made by the Thais... Remember them?

Blows me away why farang would think Bangkok would stay frozen in time in a semi 3rd world farang pleasing experience..

It's over.. All your crying will never bring it back.. Move on

Than it's time to move sunshine. Soon BKK and Thailand in general will be a high salary economy. The only reason to live in the heart of BKK is to make money.

Most Thai live/work there untill they are 30-35 before they move to the subs and buy a house in a moobaan.

Or move to Pattaya, also plenty of small condo's there and cheaper farang food on every corner. Also many more farang to drink with and loads of sexy girls as well.

Don't try to stop the development, BKK is behind the other Asian capitals and just has to catch up.

People who miss them a lot can be missed as well in BKK.

Now it's easy to walk to a mall or real restaurant...also now it's possible to see the real shops along the sidewalks.

I agree the condition of the pavement is very bad and should be dealt with...

...you have no soul....

Some    foreigners just  want  to  turn  BKK  into  their  kind  of  farang land to  suit  them..   Street stalls  should be  a part  of the  place..

The alternative is to do like Singapore, but that would take significant public expenditures to acquire land to setup Hawker Centers.....

5 minutes from where i live there are huge huge markets going on right now. ALL thai food is there and much more...every one of them has more foodstalls than whole sukhumvit ever had.

I don't understand who wants to live at sukhumvit if he has no job or decent income.

And ones who can afford to eat in restaurants should do so instead of eating from the streets between the taxidrivers and soidogs.

Why would I move to Pattaya to eat Thai street food. Pattaya hasn't had decent Thai food in twenty years, let alone street food.

I rarely eat farang food and despite living in central BKK no clue where you've found farang street food outside of KSR. A total un-neccessity. Bet I've had one pizza a year the last decade, maybe.

An other alternative is retirement houses or resorts with small bungalows.

All old people living there, all flat floors...nurses, fooddelivery, ponds with benches (and wifi) and they all can be happy.

In BKK the young generation can do their job.

Hawker centers in Singapore +3

Thailand will have to do something similar bc too many flats lack kitchens.

I think far too many farangs are under the impression that the changes were somehow made to accommodate them.

Get it into your skulls that the authorities made the changes because of complaints by Thais. This is their city, their country and the farang's opinion, quite rightly, is of no importance whatsoever.

The opinions of a bunch of beer-swilling nobodies still hunting the near-extinct 500 baht long-time of old or those looking for something to gawp at as they struggle to find something to do with their empty lives of an evening never came into it.

I like the uncluttered look. If it changes back, I'll live with it just as I did before.

I still find plenty to do in Bangkok of an afternoon or evening. I don't need to rely on the presence of oddities and fake Viagra sellers to provide entertainment when supping a cold one.

Like any normal person, I have friends and acquaintances for that.

This is Thai country and this part of the culture will never change.

I have no problem with the food stalls, street vendors, etc.  Gee, there are ways to walk around them if one does not like it.

T21 food court is the #1 spot for business Thais near Asoke.  The place is packed from open till close lucky to get a seat with 30 to 40 b food that I consider pretty decent especially good value. ( girl watching is great also)

This place will never be Singapore because of the environmental issues.  Never, impossible task to catch up/clean up on all the biological hazards and garbage disposed recklessly throughout this city.

People make light of it and 99% of farang it's a tall claim - but I love Thai food and it's a huge benefit for living here. Some delicious meal for b40 ridiculous.

If I wanted to eat farang food there are dozens of counties that do it better and perhaps cheaper. Always amazed at the (secret) eating habits of farang here.

I freaking love noodles :-p

Yeah, T21 is pretty good but it's an anomaly.

BBQ chicken, pork, fruits, coconuts, chicken soup, pork soup.  I can go on.  These are liked by Thais but are also popular falang foods I have seen every where and in farm country far away from the city.

They still have 40 baht meals in T21? That's for the cleaners i guess. An icecream costs more.

Wether you like it or not, Sukhimvit will get more expensive every year and it's not a retirementhouse. It's for hardworking young people making a career.

I saw nice bentosets in T21 foodcourts, instead of buying streetfood you can bring a bentoset home to eat later. Problem solved.

That doesn't make it FOREIGN food simply bc farang like to eat (the THAI) food. I'm lost.

"Chicken soup" lol. Don't speak much Thai do you?

You're right, of course, but is it wrong for the Thais to at least aspire to  better standard for their capital city?

There are plenty of stages between Bangkok and Singapore in terms of cleanliness.

Sorry, only losers (and high rollers) live on Sukumvhit. BTS is wholly broken and packed with aimless, clueless farang walking in circles with no clue.

T21 so it's 50 baht it's a nice place and good is mediocre but not bad all things considered. Sheesh

I'm in lower Sukhumvit, no open drains but the side sois need to be upgraded.
I'm over the moon with the vendors gone! Although there still are a few at night on suk near soi 11

There is a police tent right there and 10 meters from it is a sex toy stand operating open for business

What a terrible problem it must be for you. I really feel for you. What did the street vendor do, more than bring life to the city?
Now you got the same empty and boring sterlile world that is in every other country. I came here for lining the simple and easy life as this country can bring people.
Buy taking away the street vendors a part of the country´s soul died with it too.
