PHANG NGA: A speedboat that went missing on Thursday was found floating off Koh Yao, Phang Nga Bay, by a local fisherman yesterday afternoon.

The speedboat belonged to the Sofitel Krabi Phokeethra resort and reportedly ‘disappeared into thin air’ after being anchored off Krabi (story here).

The fisherman, Apichat Singharoon, 32, reported his discovery to the Klong Prasong village headman, but only after dragging the boat all the way from Koh Yao to Klong Prasong Pier, a journey that took him about 4 hours to complete.

not globally recognized, so why should it apply in Thailand?

Many people believe that if you find an abandoned boat it automatically belongs to you, But in fact the law isn't that simple.

May be entitled to claim salvage costs, probably limited to fuell and his time.

Hopefully he won't have to, and the resort will kick the can for his costs?  Or perhaps the resort wanted it to go missing?

Find a 4 million baht speedboat, and receive a 399 baht fruit basket from the Sofitel group !

I liked "finders keepers".

I hope they do better, if only to compensate for his time, his fuel, a little extra for karma and so the next guy that finds one of their boats adrift does the right thing.

Under Thai marine salvage law, is it "finders keepers"?

No under marine law all costs to retrieve the vessel are paid to the salvor.

The article does say "a fruit basket AND rewarded."

I do hope  the  "reward" was substantial, and not just a few  thousand baht.

Apichat Singharoon, 32 needs a good lawyer...unless he "borrowed" the boat to begin with.

What is that saying again? "No good deed goes unpunished"
