Can somebody with knowledge of car taxation explain to me why the new MX-5 is 2 700 000 Baht??? That's GBP 60 000 (I'm being generous and giving our British brother 45 to the). More than double the UK price. It's only a 2.0 litre car and is not a "luxury" manufacturer, so max tax (imported from Japan) should be around 30% am I right?

Nope, you're wrong. If not manufactured here and imported, a  vehicle will be subject to between 150 - 300% duty.

This is to protect the Thai car manufacturers.

Yep, from the TV car tax topic it seem that the little MX5 would get about 120% tax. I guess I'll look at the Thairung small roadster. Oh wait, they don't make one. So how is this protecting Thai car manufacturers??

I agree, I imported a Defender 90 last year. They don't make these over here either. Mind you, neither do LR anymore.

But the Defender WAS competing with the locally made Thairung. lol

Was watching YouTube today. A review of the new 2.0 MX-5 RF. The American commentator says the expected price in the States was 32k USD about 1 million Baht.. <deleted> almost worth being a seppo.

Import duty pushes up the price of both imported and locally made cars.  The locally made models may not be directly comparable to the MX-5 but plenty of buyers in LOS are forced to buy a Civic or something similar because the MX-5 and other imported models are just too expensive.  Seems to work well for Toyota and Honda Thailand so far.  Not so good for Thai car buyers though....

Locally made cars are still over taxed. The honda is assembled in Thailand but in Australia it costs less than here. The more expensive the car the greater the difference. So one needs to by an ecobox here just to get value for money.

One just needs to forget car prices back home, and compare only locally.

Yeah but by how much more and how about  road tax costs,  fuel and insurance,  roadworthy inspection costs,  repair costs,  service costs,  in Oz as a comparison,

Probably cheaper in Thailand (for a civic) over the long run. But for cars that are 2 or 3 times more (like a benz), I don't think so.

Benz gives the most 'face' here. Even if I could afford one, I'd cringe are the plunging resale and maintenance costs. Not much commonsense is involved in buying one here. Anyone buying one  has money to burn. Eurp cars require lots of time and money. They aren;t for me because I will keep a car well maintained for 10+ years, or until it becomes a false economy.

The worst part of the MX5 in Thailand isn't even the price markup - it's the fact that they don't import the manual transmission. A crime in that car.

LOl nope, who'd buy an imported Mazda 3?! CX-5 is imported from Malaysia under AFTA so no duties on that.
