Thailand expects windfall from Trump’s policies

BANGKOK: -- The private sector says US President's trade policies could be a windfall to Thailand.

This was what the private sector expressed at yesterday’s seminar.

TISCO Assets chief executive Mr Paiboon Nalintarangkun stated at the ‘Stock Market Outlook after the Inauguration of Donald Trump as US President’ seminar that the core of Mr Trump’s economic stimulus packages centers on jump-starting basic economic infrastructures and lowering corporate taxes from 35% to 15%.

The tax reduction will directly contribute to increased private sector investments and should help drive the US economy, he said.

This in turn will allow the global economic situation to improve which will consequently result in a windfall for Thailand, he said.

The spin doctors hard at it again to try and convince everybody including themselves that the economy is and will be hunky dory. Windbags talking about windfalls seems appropriate..

Only three days ago the military economic experts were hitting the panic button with Deputy PM Somkid calling a meeting of Thai trade representatives from 47 countries worldwide. These vacuous muppets wouldn't have a clue what's going on.

Trouble is, even if they do get a windfall, they've spent it already.
New frigates, submarines, tanks, high speed railways.....

If the governments ([past and present) of Thailand have taught me anything, it's that words here are so often just meaningless. When you have a culture of no criticizing or asking too many questions, you really don't have to think about or worry about the words you splurt out.

Where as we mock it, most Thais simply ignore it.

Very, very true - one of the best statements I have ever read on Thaivisa.

Yes, words here are totally meaningless. They have no bearing on, or relation to, reality whatsoever.

One sees this all over the place here. Empty phrases and claims, in all sectors of Thai society, while the reality is the diametrical opposite of what is pretended.

No bad news for Thailand. Tourism will go up 8% exports to grow by 5%.

No matter what happens, all will be good. :whistling:

lowering corporate taxes from 35% to 15%

These are tax RATES before application of carryforward losses and credits, business deductions, credits and income exclusions. The average EFFECTIVE  federal tax rate paid by corporations is an average 7%. Cutting the tax rate may not produce significant corporate savings, especially if tax havens are still allowed that reduces taxable income to zero.

Mr Trump is sitting in the Oval Office right now, looking at his list of priorities, and frowning to himself - how can I make Thailand feel special and improve the lives of the ruling elite there.....

I predict a spike in mostly middle level or somewhat lower wealth American medical care refugees to Thailand, especially those aged 50 through 64. Many will go on retirement visa and set up households here. It's something anyway (for Thailand).

Wait till Trump finds out what Thailand's import charges are.. Especially on autos imported from the USA.

Find out? I'm sending the tweet right now.

And why does Thailand even deserve a "windfall" ?

The premise behind Trump's campaign vision is to 'Make America Great Again'. This will have to involve serious budget cuts to EVERYTHING, especially foreign aid. I say that's a good thing.

Mr Paiboon clearly is a deep and insightful thinker.  Though on this occasion he seems to be spouting the same nonsense as everyone else who watches CNBC.  Just take infrastructure investment as one case in point ... it is not even remotely conceivable that spending on any new infrastructure project can happen during 2017.  What will a high US dollar do to US Corporate profits, does anyone believe that corporate tax cuts will be retroactive etc?

Thailand is always expecting a windfall.

And they get the "windfall" by way of public announcements, by windbags, on a regular basis (full of wind) just for the happiness of Thai peoples!

Lets hope so, Asia has been robbing the west blind for 3 decades and our incompetent and corrupt leaders have encouraged it whilst profiting from it.
