Three more Thai universities join Times Higher Education list

THREE THAI UNIVERSITIES have entered the prestigious Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings for the first time this year.

Their inclusion, when combined with the seven other Thai institutes that have long been on the list, makes Thailand the most represented in Southeast Asia.

The three newcomers are the King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (ranked in the 181-190 band); Kasetsart University and the King Mongkut's University of Technology North Bangkok (both ranked in the 251-300 band).

Other Thai higher-educational institutes in the top 300 list are: Mahidol University (ranked 97), King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (ranked in the 101-110 band); Chulalongkorn University (151-160 band); Chiang Mai University (171-180 band); Suranaree University of Technology (191-200 band); Khon Kaen University and Prince of Songkla University (both in 201-250 band).

While Thailand is the best Southeast Asian performer in terms of representation, some concerns have been expressed.

“It is disappointing that most of Thailand’s established universities have slipped in this year’s list of Asia’s best universities,” Phil Baty, editor of the Times education rankings, said.

Mahidol University’s ranking for example has dropped from 90 a year earlier.

Baty blamed the government for making no concerted effort to boost university performance or create world-ranked institutions.

“It was just last year that Thailand was one of seven countries named as potential future higher education stars by a Times Higher Education data-driven analysis,” he said.

A totally misleading headline ! In reality the educational system in Thailand has to be one of the world,s poorest, and sadly most students leave school knowing very little useful material. Show an average Thai a world map and not only will they not be able to point out the locations of Thailand or America, but many of them will not even understand what a map is !! This is not a baiting or a racial post, it is just a sad reflection on reality.

Only 1 uni in top 100 (97) In whole Asia. Terrible

...but look at all the construction for new buildings on many campuses...surely all that potential is there  5555

I sometimes wonder how many of those forum contributors sitting in judgement on the Thai HE system have themselves attended eg UK educational establishments nowhere to be found on applicable THES international rankings and think of themselves 'dismissed'.
