BMA replaces existing solid trash bins with transparent plastic bags

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is now replacing its existing solid plastic trash bins with transparent plastic bags at all main streets after a pipe bomb exploded in a solid trash bin on Ratchadamnoen Avenue injuring two city cleaners.

The order to clear the solid trash bins from busy streets, particularly where tourists visit frequently, was made by Bangkok governor Pol Gen Asawin Kwanmuang as he considered solid trash bins allow perpetrators to drop suspicious objects in.

He ordered them to be replaced by transparent plastic bags with stands that could be seen through.

Wasn't this supposed to happen after one of the previous bombs?

So the knee jerk reaction is being repeated some years after the last knee jerk reaction.

How about a metal bin that can stand the force of a pipe bomb. A plastic bag so people can have a look to see what's inside before they use it, 'cause everyone looks inside a bin before using it.

During the IRA bombing campaign in the UK nearly all litter bins were removed from the streets, some postboxes were sealed, and left luggage lockers were closed. It didn't actually stop anything, just made people feel more secure.

What helps more is a visible patrolling police presence, looking for suspicious activity not just on a collection round.

What bins where?

There were two in Bangkok. One got blown up, the other they have removed and replaced with a plastic bag.

Just shows you can't take the jerk out of the knee.
