So what's the process? I assume that they quick-test you, and if the test is positive, they ask you to park on the side of the road, where they will "offer" you to perform a real test or otherwise make a one-time contribution to the police pension fund?

i have had 3 friends test positive so far and the on the spot fine was around 10000thb. i heard another guy did a night in the slammer and 30k to go the next morning.

Oh and they had that checkpoint on Wednesday evening/night on both occasions I saw them, the second time I was on a mototaxi so didn't get stopped.

Any chance you could elaborate on exactly where the checkpoint was?

There are also stories of guys bikes, ID's, passports being held for ransom.

I have driven buzzed and it is stupid.  Now, after dark I just leave my motorbike at home and walk/take taxi/tuk tuk. Lots less stress and worry.

Passports being held for ransom is a real possibility. I was advised by my lawyer never to give a real passport to anyone. Just show them a copy and if they push further, mention it's at your lawyer's office (which my lawyer would verify if contacted). Not only can they be held for ransom, they do sometimes get lost.

Yes, this would help along with the time. There was one set up on Soi 17 at the corner near Liberty Mansion and that brothel "Darling" something. I managed to do a slow U-turn and avoid it the other night. This was very early, so I thought, about 8pm. God Bless you and OO.

No reason drive around drunk anymore. Uber providing an excellent service (never been asked for tips) and most trips end up being 5 Baht because of the 70 Baht discount for your first 10 rides. Seems Grab also lowered the mafia fares so apart from bodily injuries when driving drunk, why would you risk a 50,000 Baht fine (up from 20,000) just to save 1-2 dollars?

Sometimes you don't want anyone to see the person you have on the back of your bike. It used to be these checkpoints weren't set up until late at night. If they have in fact become an early evening event many of us happy hour drinkers want to know. Thanks and God Bless You. OO.

I don't have a problem with anyone having 6-8 beers during happy hour and going back to their soi quietly after. But just yesterday I witnessed a probably deadly accident in Soi New Plaza with some pisshead speeding over the speed bumps and wrapping someone under his truck. So don't drink too much, especially if you go around in your car.

Uber for the win, soooo easy, convenient and cheap. <deleted> using baht buses and mototaxis.

I was stopped on my MB at 2nd rd and south Pats road about 45 days ago at 9pm.  The cop did the quicky field test on me.  I did have a beer about 3 hours earlier but ate after.  I usually drink more but for some reason did not that night.  He told me to move on.

Like I said before I park it now.  No more not worth it.

Not to preach this is a very good thread I think if one person thinks twice after reading some of this maybe it will prevent them from some headaches or injury to someone.

I agree, after the first time I was stopped I counted my lucky stars and stopped driving a MB myself when going for a drink.
Had been drinking beer and sprites all night, but I think had only like 3 or 4 singha's and many sprites. I my own country that would have
been over the limit.

It is not worth all the trouble and possible accidents.

At least such devices exist.

"AlcoBlow".

Indeed just blowing directly into the cone at top of the device.

No mouth piece, nothing to put in the mouth.

One light being red all the time sounds like an improper measurement?!

Videos on the net suggest that it would indicate "red" at only 20 mg.

A very basic quick tester. Maybe just used as an indicator whether more elaborate tests have to be done?

I guess even in Thailand it would need more to prosecute a person.

One of a couple videos about "AlcoBlow":

They ALWAYS use this one.

Trappaya road after the big junction with the soi going to  Pratumnak hill

This checkpoint is often installed there on week end. No surprise.

But what surprised me more is a big checkpoint on sukhumvit road opposite side of makro IN DAY TIME.

Finally these people are not totally dumb ?

I think it's known as Soi 17. The cross road/Soi from 3rd road, over to Theprasit Road. It winds a little there at the market and Liberty Mansion. Darling was just past the S right, then left,...I think it's still open. Straight forward brothel, don't be fooled. Cheers and God Bless You. (just down from Punch and Judy)

Isn't this right outside the Lion Pub?

I think they only show you the 5-6 vehicles closest to you?

At night it takes much longer getting a ride, but I got one after 12 am, so yes, they seem to be operational at night.
