Boonyarit Nipawanit, chairman of the Federation of Assistant District Chiefs, visits a resort in Mae Hong Son yesterday, where girls under 18 are alleged to have provided sex for officials.

ONE of the five tambon administrators identified by victims in the Mae Hong Son forced prostitution ring as the persons allegedly bought sex services from them may also have drunkenly claimed to be the provincial governor, Provincial Police Region 5 deputy chief Pol Maj-General Panudech Boonreung said yesterday.

This new information might help clear the name of Mae Hong Son ex-governor Suebsak Iamwichan who was accused of being a customer of the child-sex and was transferred to an inactive post pending the result of an investigation.

The victims positively identified the five unnamed officials from the Tambon Ban Mai Administrative Organisation in Nonthaburi’s Bang Yai district as customers who bought sex on September 22 last year.

Police also have confiscated money transaction slips that show the accused officials wired money to the bank account of a person in the ring, who police kept as witness, as payment for the girls’ services, a source at the Provincial Police Region 5 said.

As well as the Tambon Ban Mai officials, police say they will soon summon some Mae Hong Son provincial administrative organisation members in Pai district, the source added.

Earlier yesterday, Wasu Phan-ngern, president of the Tambon Ban Mai Administrative Organisation in Nonthaburi’s Bang Yai district, insisted that nothing illegal happened during his group’s field trip to Mae Hong Son last September. He threatened to sue the Provincial Police Region 5 for summoning him and fellow officials as part of the probe into the forced prostitution ring, as such action had severely tarnished his reputation and that of his fellow tambon officials.

Police quizzed the Nonthaburi officials about their stay at a resort in the northern province that was known to be used for prostitution involving girls under 18.

Wasu claimed there had been a “big party” at the resort on the night of September 22, “possibly a provincial-level event”, but police had not investigated what was involved or who attended.

Claiming to possess video of official state vehicles parked outside the party venue, Wasu urged the Royal Thai Police to discipline the five local investigating officers for neglecting to investigate the nature of the gathering.

Why is every case here such a drawn out drama? At home the investigation would be made and we would hear details AFTER everyone involved had been arrested.

Here we seem to get a news update four times a day, presumably to keep us informed on how the cover up is unfolding.

Here's an idea. Shut up, get on with arresting those under suspicion, regardless of rank and tell us about it then.

First they have to scare people enough to get the envelopes coming in.

Then they need to update the information after they count the loot in the envelopes.

It's an iterative process.  Could go on for years...

And often with conflicting numbers etc.

A very cunning idea, the drunk claimed to be someone he wasn't.......face recognition included? Physical 'earmarks' identified if any?

Progress is made in the case, the drunk will be transferred asap!!

Next.................

They wanted to get arrest warrants for civil servants and the court refused the police request based on the fact that these people was civil servants (nothing about they could be guilty of sex offences or not). The problem is the whole system is a network. Only those who step out of line or get caught are sometimes sacrificed but in most cases they get protected. Until the network is broken down brick by brick the country can't go forward.

After my years here, I have come to realize that our moral compass in the West is diametrically opposite to people in Thailand. The worst arguments I have had were always about loss of face, never right and wrong,

Therefore I have almost given up on supporting my own moral compass and will conform to survive.

No, only joking!

Duh....Because if an underling protests, he gets accused, tried, convicted and bankrupted for defaming the rich and powerful. The system is rigged against the honest citizen.

While such behavior is totally unacceptable there seems to be a view by many posters that there is no police or government corruption in other countries and that it only occurs in Thailand

I have lived both in the U.K. And Australia and there are many documented cases where the police have been found guilty of corruption or failed to take action

In the last couple of years there was a case similar to what is being discussed here in I think Rotherham in the North of England

The persons involved I think we're from Pakistan and police at the highest level wouldn't pursue the issue for fear of creating racial tension

It took the actions of the Director of Public Prosecutions who happens to be Muslim to pursue the matter and bring the perpetrators to court

You could fill this site with many other examples

In Australia a couple of former state government ministers have been found guilty of corruption regarding land and mining deals and are likely to spend time time behind bars

The list is endless

And we could talk about the priests of various religions being protected by their superiors or the leadership, who are surely in it too. Of course, it does not make it right in LOS. Yet, there are some very decent people everywhere. Still, if there is some kind of network and internal protection, it might bring the worst into some of those groups.

They are putting up with it because they have no other choice. They are not and never will be organised enough to do anything about it. They are terrified that the people in involved in this disgusting event, are powerful enough to make them vanish, if they were to become too nosey.

Are you not aware of the system over here,  nor of the tier of importance , that is in effect in this country. Why do you think that the Red Bull guy is still free. Also you must realise that the apathy of the people in this country makes them disinterested.Thais are quite happy to carry on regardless as long as they are not involved. This isnt Russia in the 19/20th century. There are no rabble rousers  here.No one gets up on a soap box and calls the people"brothers" and preaches rebellion. When all the payouts have finally been paid out, and everybody has been 'cleared' of wrong doing, this will all go away like mist on the wind. The guilty will breathe sigh of relief, while mentally calculating how long it will take to replace their lost bribe money. The top cozzer's wif/mia noi will get a new car each. And every thing will eventually go back to the way it was. There is suppression of the media here, so there will be no later stories in the press, to keep this scandal live.It wont even have much of an impression in Europe, as most of the upper class and political buffoons are doing exactly the same thing.

You knew that the bib would find a way for the Gov to get out of this.Probably because he knows a lot on the higher ups and officials they will get some patsy to confess that he tole the girl and others at the resort that he was THE MAN .Then either through bribery or intimidation the underage girls will not be able to recognize any one else except the patsy. The Patsy is already going to jail so the will make it a bit easier on him while he is there. Ten To One that The Gov will be back at his old habits but, at a new place soon.

Sadly i think you are right.
