May 17, 20178 yr Missing earth connection – when you touch the strings, you become "earth" – in old time Europe a wire to a heater (hot water heating system with metal pipes) would limit the hum, however that's not a common solution at Samui. Another weird old trick for valve amps is to reverse the mains plug, which often reduce the hum, but won't eliminate it. I've seen guitar players with a copper wire connected to the guitar in the plectrum hand – or tight around the wrist – which also can work...
