I have the 3bb 200/50 package for 1200 baht pm which uses a router to send wifi to my iPads and laptop. For movie downloads, however, the speed is rather slow (anything from 250 kbs to 1mbs, fluctuating) and I thought that maybe a cable linking the router to the laptop bypassing the wifi would do the trick, so I bought a CAT 5e Ethernet cable and plugged into 'LAN 1' at the back of the router and into the (only) LAN socket on the laptop. I lost my wifi signal and everything went dead.

I've tried changing in Settings from wifi to Ethernet but it doesn't seem to help.

Has anyone got any suggestions, please? Thanks in advance.

Although using a cable connection is always a good idea:

the rates you mention are so bad, that I find it highly unlikely that it is related to poor WiFi.

And you write "for movies however".

Why should WiFi only be bad for movies.

About the lost connection:

what OS are you using? Windows ?

Have you tried the Troubleshooter (right click on network symbol in task bar).

To find out whether these downloads are slow for all and not only you, you would have to disclose what sources you are using (if that is appropriate).

As KhunBENQ says above, run the troubleshooter first. To extend the troubleshooting, assuming it is a windows OS, you need to check your Ethernet settings, your Wi-Fi settings are different. Bit drawn out but easy! The snaps below are from a computer conected by wi-fi; the screens you will see if connected by cable will show Ethernet. Snaps taken from Windows 10 Pro OS so may differ slightly if you are using a different OS.

Right-click on your connection icon on the bottom right of your screen and open Network & Sharing Center. Once open, follow the snaps:

Check that your IPv4 address has the same third field ('1' in this case) as the default gateway. The following snaps will show you how to change that.

If the IP's are different (or to see how your Ethernet is setup), go back to Network & Sharing and follow

The below screen is what you would expect to see. If it is not, make a note of the information then select Obtain IP automatically and Obtain DNS server automatically, click OK and see if you get a connection. If that doesn't work, try setting the fields up manually (as below) using the information for the gateway in screenshot 3 above. Make sure the third group of the IP matches ('1' in this example) the gateway and type in an IP address something like below.
