Naklua canal neighbors warned to stop illegal dumping

PATTAYA:--Pattaya is threatening to prosecute Naklua residents if they don’t stop dumping garbage in the Nok Yang Canal and a nearby mangrove forest.

Deputy Mayor Vichien Pongpanit led a team of city workers to investigate the waste problem May 17 after reports a neighboring housing project was encroaching on the canal area and using it as a dump.

Workers cleaned the area and officials urged nearby residents to stop dumping garbage in the area. Those caught will be prosecuted for environmental crimes, city hall vowed.

Environmentalists had sounded the alarm earlier on the problem, but were mostly ignored. The mangrove forest is currently in critical condition, with all of it being turned into a dumping ground, causing even more damage to the ecosystem.

It starts at home? Crap education. Then runs through out society!

Behaviour not from a lack of knowledge, but from an attitude of selfishness. They would think in the same way as those errant drivers - "Who would stop me?".

Rubbish is dumped anywhere, all over Thailand.  Not surprising though.  Apart from 7/11and some other convenience stores, there are no rubbish bins to be seen.  You would think that the local administration would provide somewhere to drop rubbish, especially in the shopping areas, but that would mean more work to empty them and having to pay somebody to do it, so that's not going to happen.

And so it will continue.

If they are dumping in public places they are in need of 'crap education.'  Maybe their homes don't have toilets?

But they seem to have enough money for a full time cleaner to stand in both the male & female toilets and make sure the toilets are usually spotlessly clean. Better than Western countries where you have piss all over the toilet seat and floor.
