UBON RATCHATHANI: -- Five engineering students were taken to Ubon police yesterday to tell cops what had happened after they were paid to open a dozen accounts at a local SCB branch.

Jaroon Khreauchalee, 17, said that he and four friends were paid 500 baht each to open a dozen accounts in their own names. They each opened two or three accounts.

They did it to get some money and didn't think they were doing anything wrong. Since then they have discovered that the accounts are being used by a man named only as Songwut, 19, who is in an older class at their institute of engineering.

They said that there is evidence of money flowing into the accounts in the region of 100 million baht a month. They said they were convinced it must be illegal money and they wanted the police to know they have nothing to do with it.

The twelve accounts were opened at the Sunee Hotel branch of SCB from December of last year, they said.

Police in central Ubon are investigating the claims.

100 million baht running through the accounts in a month?

That is big league for a 19 year old to be handling. It does seem however that maybe he should have waited for a couple of years to learn how to cover his tracks a bit better.

And only paying 500 baht to the persons opening the accounts? In all seriousness though, who would be stupid enough to do this regardless about how much you were paid or even what age you were when you did it?

Then they are either liars or incredibly stupid.

is it even legal to be paid to open up accounts? I can't think of any legit reason why someone would want to pay you to do that.

17 years old. Covers both options pretty well I'd say.

Stupid - It's normal for young students to just do what older students say is good.

The 19 year old probably isn't the mastermind, he was probably paid 5000 baht or so to do it and just pocketed the difference.

Yeah, in the fine print it is illegal.  The account isn't going to be used by them, they sign that no illegal activity will be done, etc.  Pretty fraudulent

Has to be drug money or the even more lucrative counterfeit printer ink business. Do not need to be Einsteine to work out if the accounts are illegal otherwise you would not need ID to open one.
