Police volunteer killed in road crash while chasing defiant biker

By The Nation

A police volunteer in Samut Prakan province was killed early Saturday when his motorcycle crashed into a truck while chasing a biker who refused to stop at a road checkpoint.

Nop-anon Omod, 42, died at the scene of the accident on Soi Judsun Sanoh 7 in Tambon Thai Ban Mai in Samut Prakan’s Muang district. The incident happened at 1.30am.

Another police volunteer, Kawee Chaisaeng, 26, said he saw either the rider or the one riding pillion of the chased motorcycle kick Nop-anon’s motorcycle before it crashed into the rear of the parked truck, causing it to spin and hit a wall.

Kawee said he and Nop-anon were manning a road checkpoint of the Praekkasa community with a policeman to prevent road racing. They saw three motorcycles coming so they asked the riders to stop, but one of the bikes sped off prompting Nop-anon Kawee to chase them.

Rangsan Surapol, 23, who rode one of the three motorcycles that were asked to stop, said the fleeing bike was ridden by Atthapol Naknual, 25, with Arthit Weeraphan, 19, riding pillion.

Rangsan said he and those on two other motorcycles were returning from a party when they were asked to stop. He said Atthapol might have feared being arrested for drunk driving.

Leaving the scene or running from police need to be very strick penalties but ofcourse that will never happen.

If the culprits causing the death of the police volunteer are rich and/or famous, they will soon be apprehended and dealt with.

The penalties for 'running' are just too slack.

I know a Thai who preferred not to stop at a DUI check point. Upon seeing the check point he did a U-Turn in his car but the BiB saw this and gave chase. He tried to escape, him in car, the BiB on a bike. At one point the BiB skidded off the bike and slightly injured themselves. Eventually the 'car driver' was caught.

He got a minor beating (Hit a couple of times by the BiB) - I think his penalty was minor, a few thousand baht.

IMO - This should be a huge fine + Time in Jail + Loss of License for a Period of time.

What to do with these Bikes  - Harsh Penalties:

1) IF No Bike Tax - Bike Confiscated until Tax Paid

2) IF No License - Bike confiscated for 1 month

3) IF DUI - Bike confiscated for 1 month

4) IF Caught Racing - Bike confiscated for 1 month

5) IF try to escape (and caught) - Bike Confiscated (Sold, Proceeds to Charity).
