Suggestions on where to rent in Udon Thani

After deciding to depart Chiang Mai to get away from this persistent toxic air, I have decided to relocate to Udon Thani.  I made a number of trips there back in the 1970s when I lived in Korat and always had a good time.  I know that was many years ago, but from what I have been able to gather, it does look like a good option with everything I would want - minus the bad air I hope.

That being said, I would like to rent a two or three bedroom detached house, preferably unfurnished or with little furnishings as I have my own.  I also have a car so I don't need to be right in town and would prefer something secure with a bit of a yard where I could relax and have a few friends over for a beer now and then.

Any suggestions on what areas to consider or avoid and what the typical rents go for would be greatly appreciated.

Partially furnished 2 and 3 bedroom detached villas are plentiful. Older villages like Romyen on the eastern ring road has some listed around 8000 baht/m. Newer villages with newer design and construction can be anywhere between 16,000 baht/m and 20,000 baht/m. Prices generally start at around 18,000 baht/m for anything decent inside the ring road, inner city.

Since you have your own wheels, there's saving to be made on rentals in any village, old or new, that are around 8 km to 10 km beyond the ring road. I would say a median 12,000 baht/m will be a good guide. IMHO, the further away from the eastern ring road the better as that carries about 95% of traffic to/from Nong Khai and Kohn Kaen and the air quality isn't as good as it was about 10 years ago. The quieter south ring road and southwest towards Nong Wuaso are good bets.

Thanks for the reply.  I'll need to spend some time checking things out as this will probably be the last move I ever make.

No worries. If you need any further assistance, you can post here or PM me. If you aren't already a member, I can send you some links to the local forums.

Since you are the only one who has replied I guess local forums are a better bet so if you can provide some links that would be great.

Does anyone have a link to a good map that shows the different areas around the city of Udon?   I looked and couldn't find anything to give me an idea of where the different areas are.  Just found maps with small sections of the city or a vague map of the Udon Thani province with little detail.  Thanks
