24 watermelon pickers injured in horror road crash
By The Nation

PRACHINBURI: -- Twenty-four workers were injured - five seriously - when a pickup truck transporting water melon pickers crashed into another pickup carrying fertiliser in Prachinburi province late on Monday night.

Police said the accident happened at about 11.40pm at the intersection of Ban Sang-Phanom Sarakham and Bang Nam Priew-Prachinburi roads in Moo 4 village in tambon Ban Sang, Ban Sang district.

The pickup carrying the workers was driven by Chamroen Somboon while Watchala Mala drove the other vehicle.

Chamroen told police he had been transporting the 20 workers to their homes in Muang Prachinburi after they picked watermelons in Saraburi province.

Chamroen said he approached the intersection without checking traffic on the other road because he expected no other vehicles to be on the road due to the late hour and he crashed into the pickup at full speed.

The no people in the back of pickups would have saved a lot of people if policed enough. Too bad the Thai populace decided safety is bothersome (actually many foreigners also said it was a tax on the poor if they can't have people in the back) Now people like this are forced in the back (if there were rules they would have been transported in a beter way). Its all nice and fine if you step into the back of a truck because you want too.. but these poor workers often have no other choice.

"... transporting the 20 workers to their homes ..." in a pickup truck. And just this morning was the post regarding shake down by cops regarding items in back of pickup not secured, or some such foolishness. But 20 people in back of pickup is fine, business as normal. Something is very wrong.... but we already knew that, didn't we?

I feel safe in this neck of the woods say posters on TV

They must stay indoors all day and all night then

dangers are many fold around here and still they will not try and do anything to help clear the sad state of the country roads, idiots who simply do not care about lives.

The driver must have the emotional development of a 5-year-old. When transporting 24 (!) people in the back of a pick up truck, there is inherent danger. As driver, you have a massive responsibility to drive safely. A mature adult would be keenly aware of that. A dumbass kid would not. I wonder how old the driver was.

Every day, the death toll is mind-blowing. Just think of the effects of this one crash. All that medical care to be paid for, all that pain and suffering and permanent disability. All the burden placed on family members. All due to one stupid idiot.

And every day, the needless tragic situation is repeated.

He expected no traffic? .... far too common idiotic thinking among drivers.

EVERDAY here out in the country I come round a  corner and the oncoming vehicle has ALL 4  wheels on my side of the road, EVERYDAY the same "shocked"  look on their dumb faces and same swerve over, some even stupid enough to parp the horn as if i shouldnt be there.

No idea if your life is boring (have to do something at a hospital i usually play with my phone).. but to see not one person using a seat belt is pretty dam bad.

Of your consecutive posts, this is definitely my favourite.

Did the same at a gas  station closeby and same result, 20 cars in/out no seatbelt, not one. BKK seems  better but out here ( by no means  hill  billy land Pranburi) no one seems to wear them

Gave up with "being concerned"  a long time ago as they dont give a sh1t about anything including their own or others safety in anyway, now I see all accidents as simple hilarity and every trip from here to BKK 250km provides ample hilarity, I drive expecting a  car to fall from the sky and would not be surprised in ANY way to find that  occur

A better one is on a 4  lane road, I drive on the inside lane as its deserted and its where you should be  anyway, they NEVER use this  lane.................UNTIL................... they get to a left hand corner then sure as day theyll cut right into it and again the "surprised"  look of <deleted> am "I" doing there with corresponding horn blarting................. actually they are 100% predictable now in what crap theyll do

Worst part is the same driver will do EXACTLY the same on the next right hander and again and again and  again repeat ad nauseum.same result, isnt that the definition of madness or something?

I actually never really looked how many people wore seat-belts. I do check for helmets and found that in Bangkok more wear helmets as in other places. In my area I see more drivers wearing helmets as not. I always wear a seat belt myself just a habit and actually almost every Thai I have driven with wore one.

Not unusual to see similar where my Mrs comes from, Chanthaburi, the migrant workers come over to work on the fruit picking, far too menial for Thais to do, but when they are shipping them home at the end of the day you see pickups loaded with ridiculous numbers of people on board, and driving like crazy banshees.

I asked my Mrs about the crossing junctions/crossroads etc with out slowing or stopping to check all is clear, her reply, they think nothing coming, can't argue with stuuuupidity.
