Bought a car 23 march in Samut Prakan, still waiting for the white plates.....

This system in Thailand is completely outdated, in my home country we get the plates same day as the car rolls out from the dealer...

You are now committing an offense..Go to the place where you pay the road tax and complain, they will give you a note for the BiB...Take all your purchase paperwork and someone who speaks Thai..

We recently bought a second hand vehicle in Bangkok. It was transfered into my wifes name and we stay in HH. The VL is up for renewal and we can do it in HH. The vehicle is thus registered in Bkk.on a HH address.

Correct T/A but I wouldn't bother. My first one 'Red plate' I had for over 3 months without a problem. He's only been waiting for 7 weeks about normal for LOS.

True but how do they know that you have overstayed the 30 day limit. If they want monies they have many ways of doing that. They had seen you picking your nose for example.

I always bluff it out and scream at them normally works they just want to get rid of you.

So's not filling out the book when going out of province, And traveling after 6pm. All I have done in the last week anyway.

Rules here are never adhered to. I'm off well out of province in the next few days not BKK, will I fill anything out not on your life. I'll continue to plod on as normal. I will take the book with me and plead ignorance. Easy for me as I look stupid anyway.

Just had a thought. Here in K.P.Phet no bugger wares a helmet when riding their M/C after 5pm, (Unless it's raining) Reason the law still abides but there isn't any BIB about anyway. Fact. Crazy but there it is.

N/B no accidents after 5pm ??? TIT up the them.

To avoid this, if youve paid on delivery you can go to the LTD and get them pressed out in an hour or so ,Dealers wait as long as poss and get a batch done. The place was just down the road when i did it, fully expecting a Cant Do. Went back to the Dealer, they popped em on.

To be honest I have forgotten the rules, hope some one will come along to say if l am wrong.

You can only drive in the province you bought it in daylight and fill in a book they give you logging your travels. You can use the plates for 30 days only, after that a ticket...

You are quite correct but the 30 is never kept to as the licensing department can take 2 or 3 months to issue the proper plates

Yeah, but I am trying to avoid registration fees 2 times. I don't want to pay registration fees in BKK to get BKK plates, and then do the same things in Chiang Mai.
Also, where to return red plates and get deposit back ? To Transport Office or to Dealer ?

The dealer does it all. When they mail you the new plates ypu return the red ones and they send your deposit back. Forget about driving at night and out of your province blah blah blah. You think the dealer never sold a car before? Dont over think it.  I bought my car in BKK and drove to Phuket stopping to stay the night halfway. 3 months later I got new plates and returned the old ones with the log book. Done.

I came to CM a fews weeks before moving here to find a house to rent. Went to Honda dealer to ask about what I needed for buying a car. Was asked for passport and was told I could buy  a car. Walked out of dealers having ordered a car to be ready the day after we were due to arrive in CM.

3 weeks later arrived in CM went to dealer and paid for and picked up car and drove off. No plates at all and was told red plates in about 2 weeks. They told me if I was fined for no plates prior to them arriving to bring receipt to dealer and they would reimburse fine. Plates arrived and they installed. Got log book but was told nothing about it. Was told normal plates due in about 6 weeks. Went back in 6 weeks. No plates. kept going back for 6 months. Still no plates. At the 6 month visit I enquired more and insisted to find out why no plates. I was asked who sold me car and I told them who. Oh she has left now. So they checked up as to the progress. Car had not even been registered, she had not done the paperwork. So they got me to sign then and had new plates soon after. Good thing is they did not back date rego so drove around for free rego for 6 months, albeit illegally.

as far as I know one CAN NOT drive a new car from one province to another....also you should not have paid car tax as IT is "FREE" for the first year

You can drive anywhere as long as you have entered it in the book. But you cant drive after 6pm or before 6am. So they say. No one seems to take any notice of that.

Regards Tax if you haven't agreed for the seller to pay that you are libel for all costs. Noting is free unless its sorted first.

I'd register the car in Bangkok - for you and subsequent owner it does not make a difference.

If you transfer the car with red plates to Chiang Rai then ensure, that the dealer also gives you the brown book. Latter serves to enter the date and the route you are traveling (get the dealer to insert "transfer of vehicle from Bangkok to Chiang Rai for registration"). Should you be stopped on the way by the police then that book is sufficient proof of your undertaking.

Also make sure that you have a first class insurance on the vehicle from Day One. Red plated cars are stolen more frequent due to their novelty.

Last but not least, do NOT leave that brown book in the car (like later on the blue book/car registration) as if the car disappears WITH the book then you're in hot water since the thief can maneuvre at ease.

I moved from Pattaya to Issan, never change plates, had no problem re taxing the bike every year putting it through its MOT for 10 years etc, wasn't even in my name----friend left it for a short time 11 years ago..... brought my  car's in BKK  (wouldn't buy anywhere else) you can renew tax anywhere you want--doesn't have to be in your home town. If it is an expensive model car, keep the BKK plates on there--my Thai friend gets a lot of lee way in his Merc, as they are not sure quite who they are dealing with....(doesn't seem to work for farang)

.
*BTW Issan is a lot more lax than the cities---so maybe someone will correct.

Agreed. No need to register in your home province.

We had Udon plates in Chiang Mai and when we replaced that vehicle there was no problem with the sale. Also Ford in CM asked if we wanted CM or Bangkok plates on the new car.

Also, you're not allowed to drive a car or motorcycle with red plates at night.

Actually from 1800 hrs till 0600 hrs.

The fine is quite high when the police catch you.

It will be worse if you do it anyway and have an accident while driving a car with red plates at night.

What would be an actual advantage if I register my car in BKK, not where I live - in Chiang Mai ?

It seems like it will cost me more money and time.

I have paid deposit for a car just a few days ago, and I am going to pick up my car in the 3rd week of June (so just about 2 weeks away from now). I don't think this will be enough time for the dealer to get white plates for me and register my car in BKK. So I will have to drive away on red plates anyway, and then book flight again to visit BKK just to pick up white plates.

Seems like driving away on red plates and registering my car in Chiang Mai is more reasonable, as I will not have to go to BKK again.

Have you ever heard of the Post baywatch82..?.......why would you fly down to BKK ??

DHL will deliver same day.

I dont think there is any advantage or disadvantage in where your car plates are from.

It really doesn't matter where your car is registered, some prefer Bangkok license plates other just use the ones from their province. Cost is the same. It really only matters when you sell the car you have to go to the DLT office where your car is registered.

Just another thing. The red plates, cost for registration, picking up the white plates and replacing the red ones should all be covered by the dealer.

Yes I have heard.

Just can't imagine getting white plates from the Transport Office in BKK to Chiang Mai by Post services.
And again, what would be the advantage of having car registered in BKK, rather than where I live - in CM.

Visited 4 Honda dealers in Chiang Mai, and 1 in BKK.

They all excluded registration costs from the car price.

It is really hard to get anything extra from Honda dealers right now. They all say Honda Civic Hatchback is a really hot issue right now, and very long waiting list. They don't offer almost anything extra. Only a car and 1st class insurance. Some dealers will add some very cheap extras, such as cheap windows film and a plate frames.

Seriously --- where do you think you are living ..darkest Africa .

You have 4 DHL offices in Chaing Mai--I didn't even look to see how many FedX--same day delivery to your door. I brought a Honda Accord in BKK 2 years back-- saved a lot of Baht--I still run around with BKK plates because.."THERE'S NO DIFFERENCE" use what plates you want---can you tell the difference in what's written underneath the number.

Thanks JAS21, that's a lot of info, all new to me.

Especially "Allowament letter" and "brown book". Never heard of that.

Yeah I was thinking about getting those colorful plates with lucky numbers, but apparently it is really expensive. On some auction record price was 25mln baht, but common prices are from 50,000 baht to 1-2 mln.

Can you tell more about that brown book ? What is it for ? Why should I rub out previous dates and put new dates ?

Yes those plates are expensive ... I didn't mean those.

Numbers are released in batches ... batch size depends on provinces.

All 'the best' are removed from the batch and auctioned off.  You can look at what's left and reserve ... ask at LTO, if interested, to see the list. You can also work out when the next batch may be released.
