Red Songtaews

Featured Replies

Thanks, I posted on this elsewhere.

Let's unpack this and understand what it means. Supposed to take effect August 30. Of course, the Songthaew Mafia will probably push back as they always have.

  • All songtaews must now be re-registered as commercial cars (Car 30)
  • All existing standard routes will be removed and they will be limited to staying within the second ring road.
  • All songtaews will now be free to drive anywhere in the city.

These two rules seem to be in conflict. Any idea what this means?

  • They may not charge more than 30 baht per person.
  • If the songtaew is hired privately, the price should not exceed 200 baht and the driver must not pick up any other passengers during that trip.
  • All drivers must also attend a training seminar, after which they will receive a QR code and online account that contains the driver’s profile, prices and regular routes. Passengers will be able to scan the QR code and leave comments and rate the driver’s service on their profile.

Sounds like they are turning into Uber drivers.

The same issue of Chiang Mai City Life reports on a new fleet of ELECTRIC tuk-tuks!

http://www.chiangmaicitylife.com/news/450-electric-tuk-tuks-for-chiang-mai-approved-by-dlt/

No details on how these are going to go to the operators. Are they for sale? Can someone with an old tuk-tuk trade it in for a good deal? Will the roof be higher???

And they will all have seat belts and air conditioning.

I'm not sure the electric tuk-tuks (e-tuks) will feature a trade-in option.

Going price for one of these glorified golf carts is 13,550 Euro = 518,943 B.

The new plan will see 450 new ‘three-wheel electric commercial vehicles’ roll out over the next year. The Nakorn Lanna Cooperative applied for the change to be approved by authorities and now the approval has been given, they will now begin the project.
