PM chides media for excessive coverage of bar girl’s murder case

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha blamed the media for their excessive reporting of the grisly murder case of a bar girl and stressed the need of a law to rein in the media.

He said he didn’t understand why the media had kept reporting on the murder case for three weeks in a row and were still doing so until now. He also noted that the media’s over-coverage of the case would not benefit the society, especially the youth who could not judge which is right or wrong.

The prime minister went on saying that he had no intention to restrict freedom of the press, but noted that the media’s coverage of the murder case made him rethink that a law would be needed to rein in the media.

Media is all about making money and not simply reporting the news. Media outlets are beholden to their sponsors who want as many people reading and tuning in to see their product.

When it comes to capatalism, media will give the people what they want. Unfortunately for the PM, the people don't wanna be listening to him on a Friday night talking about eating less bread and more rice, etc.

I think it is more a case of the media not so much focussing on the gory details but giving the deserved attention to the fools of policemen who have been honeying up to the girls and humouring them. I refer in particular those policemen who have just been "transferred".

The PM would be better off applying his bullying skills on those police who find it difficult to behave themselves in front of the media and thereby giving the police force in general an even worse image than they have already.

I knew it was just a matter of time before this clown spouted garbage again. It is being reported because it is a grisly case of national interest. That's what the press does, reports on things of interest. It would be wonderful if every day there were stories of blue skies and happiness, but the reality is different. You would hope that a countries national leader had the brains to understand that, and that he harms the country's reputation more with his talk of controlling the media, than the bad news story probably would have.

Perhaps he's annoyed at the over-coverage  because she was just a lowly bar girl?

Thinking outside the box, he could get some mileage out of this to, as he says, "benefit society, especially the youth who could not judge which is right or wrong."   He could seize the initiative and say being a bar girl isn't good and in fact, can be dangerous - case in point.

But you have to admit bar girls exist, and why, and that presents a PR/National Image conundrum.  Much easier to show dismissive annoyance and suggest the press should just quit talking about it.

Do people in Thailand lack the power to turn off their TV sets or not read stories that they find inappropriate ?   Media makes their money from such tasteless things.  People should be allowed to exercise self control

So he's saying that youth can't judge right from wrong......and reporting on the gruesome case should be quietened down.

A few hookers kidnapped, killed and chopped up a hooker friend...escaped across the border...captured by Myanmar cops and handed back.....now victims family wants 10 million....and this case is not newsworthy?....

It's certainly a little better than the tripe we get each day over the connected and elite and the crimes they commit.....and get let off!

that's how we got Trumped.

and it... and Trump... are not one time flukes.  the PM is spot on, but will get nowhere on this.  example.... spending 200 billion Baht for an "aerotropolis" at U-tapao.... if generalized illiteracy is so pervasive no one reads anything not even "real" newspapers anymore... only social media nonsense and comic books....

you can't do MRO without expert personnel.. you can do easy stuff.. but heavy aircraft checks???? how is that much different from nuclear power plants for instance? enough to turn U-tapao into an "aerotropolis"? building buildings won't work, you must have people.

Where are you from?

The P.M.is lucky that the Thai press is as conservative as it is. If he was in the UK, he could open The Sun newspaper over his morning coffee and read about all kinds of excesses while staring at a well presented pair of tits.

On second thoughts, that's often the case here when Grumpy and Dumpy are seen together. in the news

Media would be in grave danger if covered "real" news: the corruption, the powerful and their tricks, etc etc. Got to fill the time and space with something. can only have so many stories about latest super star, food cart or court, cute puppy etc per day (I watch Thai news in morning with wife... oy vey)

But...but....The news here is full of Police Circus because nothing of real interest or importance is ever allowed to be reported on.

Seems he doesn't want any news of any sort, just a black out which leaves him and his cohorts to do whatever they want without interference !

I think he was annoyed because she stole the media lime light from him.

The media coverage was a bit OTT but apparently a lot the most recent media reporting focused on how a lot of people were pissed off by the RTP's treating the accused like some sort of celebrity, pictures of her sleeping arrangements on the floor of the police station, always smiling with no handcuffs, having coffee and breakfast and endless line of cops posing for selfies taken while in 'custody' and posting on their social media. This nonsense just fed the media which has little else to sift through to find stories.

A total contradiction in just one sentence!   "No intention to restrict freedom of the press"  but "makes him rethink that a law would be needed to rein in (i.e. RESTRICT) the media (i.e. THE PRESS).

No surprise at all at the contradiction though as it can and will be put down as a "misunderstanding", were he to be asked.
