Driving around Cambodia
Hiring a car is one of the most amazing experiences imaginable. First, you must escape your mum’s basement. Then you must obtain an automobile driving licence issued by your local government office by passing a written test and a practical driving assessment to demonstrate that you can operate a vehicle by obeying traffic laws and without crashing into other vehicles, walls, or pedestrians. This will also require a fee paid to the government for obtaining the licence, which is then normally valid for a period of time, anywhere from one to five years. Once you have achieved all that, you must secure a credit card from a financial institution of your choosing by providing evidence that you have some kind of income and a theoretical ability to repay debt. Sometimes, obtaining a credit card also requires paying an annual fee for the service. For security reasons, the card will normally be valid for only 2 to 3 years and then need to be replaced with a new one. Before you are even eligible to rent an automobile, you must meet strict age requirements, usually needing to be at least 21 or even 25, depending on the automobile rental company. If you are deemed too young, you may still be allowed to rent a car, but only after paying a special “young driver” fee to compensate for your youthful recklessness. Next, you contact an automobile rental company of your choosing that is known to maintain a fleet of vehicles for temporary use and make a reservation. Upon arrival, you present your driver’s licence and credit card. Some companies will also ask for a secondary form of identification, such as a passport, and require you to provide a local address or accommodation details to prove that you are not planning on living in the car. Your documents are then photocopied and attached to a rental agreement, which you are required to sign in duplicate. One copy is given to you and must be kept in the vehicle at all times in case law enforcement stops you while operating the vehicle and you need to prove that you did not steal the automobile. The rental company will then charge you in advance for the full duration of your rental period, as well as a deposit to cover any potential damage. Basic insurance is typically included, although this may not actually cover anything useful. You will usually be offered additional insurance for extra fees, covering things that the basic policy pointedly does not, in the event of theft or an automobile accident involving damage to the vehicle. After that, you are taken to view the vehicle. A visual inspection follows, during which you examine the car for pre-existing scratches, dents, or signs of previous trauma. These are noted down in detail, and you are required to sign a vehicle condition report to confirm that you agree with the assessment and will not be blamed or held accountable later for the car’s sordid past. You are then handed a set of keys to operate the vehicle and shown that the vehicle has a full tank of petrol (or gas, depending on the continent). You are informed that the car must also be returned to the rental company with a full tank, or else you will be charged a refuelling fee, which is always significantly higher than the cost of just filling it up yourself. If you drive long distances, you will need to refuel the car at least once, which involves figuring out how to open the fuel cap and praying that you remembered which side the tank is on. Eventually, you must return the car to the rental office on time, ideally before the exact minute your rental period ends, to avoid a surprise late fee. Upon return, a staff member will re-inspect the vehicle to ensure no new damage occurred while it was in your possession. If the vehicle is clean, undented, and still technically drivable, your deposit will be approved for release and should be refunded to you sometime in the next 7 to 10 business days, assuming there are no system errors, that no one goes on holiday, and that nothing is flagged by their system in the meantime. If you are planning on undertaking this process in Cambodia, then it is recommended that you get in contact first with a local expert named Yagoda, who will be able to take you around to visit all types of cheap and dingy bars (the kind that you love and that fall within your tight budget) and help you secure any other form of illicit drug that might make your journey more pleasurable. Note that she operates primarily by word of mouth, only accepts payment in small denominations of U.S. dollars or magic mushrooms, and is otherwise hopeless for providing anything other than the services mentioned above. By 1971, Nixon closed the gold window as the US gold reserves were being drained, and the era of fiat currency began. To this day, the dollar has remained the global reserve currency, although there is now movement towards a multipolar world. -
