BANGKOK: -- The national police chief has ordered police nationwide not to take bribes from illegal workers and their employers or risk stiff penalties.

Deputy police spokesman Pol Colonel Krissana Pattanacharoen said that Pol General Chakthip Chaijinda also had asked for the cooperation from the public including migrant workers and employers to report bribes to police.

The order came as the government tries to regulate the immigration system for workers from Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos.

The public has criticised the police for taking bribes from illegal workers and their employers so that they do not have to register with authorities.

Given that their meager salary and position makes bribes an essential part of their duties, doubtful they will catch a police officer looking the other way or tipping off a factory of an impending raid.

Stiff penalties says the man that looks like Cuba gooding jr?

how stiff would they be pray tell ey?

Oh no, replied the horrified, trembling offices, we dread those stiff

penalties, and most of all, no moving to inactive posts, or god forbid,

dismissal....

It doesn't "make it an essential part" ... what nonsense. The planks that are sitting playing with traffic lights aren't exactly putting their lives on the line for the populace. Also, I can't remember being asked for a bribe by the nurses at the local government clinic: let me guess...they're rolling in cash so don't need bribe money

But he only warns them about taking bribes from illegal workers and their employers.

Presumably taking bribes (or extorting) from anyone else for any other reason is quite OK then?

The national police chief has ordered police nationwide to not get caught taking bribes as this could lead to a loss of face and profits for all involved and lead to questions nobody wants to answer.

"The national police chief has ordered police nationwide not to take bribes from illegal workers and their employers or risk stiff penalties."

There should only be 1 penalty - "Dismissed from the force, with guaranteed jail-time."

Anything less than that is a complete joke!  But then, what's new!

Never a day goes by without Thai police making headlines for dishonesty and corruption.  Now even the police chief recognises this and is at pains to emblazon their reputation across the National Press.  What a bunch of unfunny clowns.

Yes... Get caught taking bribes and if you are not up high enough on the totem poll

you will be assigned to a no active post where you will not be able to collect "donations"

from the public.

Not "taking bribes" from illegal workers or employers or "asking for bribes from illegal workers or employers"

is that the same thing I wonder or a nice little "loophole"

everything is in the small print these days!

That's strange.  I had assumed that the main purpose of the new decree was to boost police incomes, as well as make life as miserable as possible for migrant workers.  Too bad that Thai employers and the economy overall will have to suffer.

Agreed, and what about police demanding payoffs to allow the workers to exit / to travel etc., and / or just cleaning out their wallets.

punchless speak; but it does reveal how police officers think

In other words, usually, you only have to warn publicly people against doing something -- if the person issuing the warning thinks the others are likely to do the inappropriate thing.

Of course, who else would know the habits of his local officers and subordinates better than the chief himself, who sits at the head of this auspicious organization.

But its business as usual for the Traffic police I suppose then.
