Something like a Samsung Hero?

Very easy to get hold of, they sell them at most mobile phone shops/stalls probably even sell them in your local Tesco

I've got a Nokia 130 Dual Sim dumbphone, bought from Lazada for about Bht800, use it as a back-up and when travelling and buy a local SIM.

I think you'll find that it is only a 2 G bandwidth phone so reception will be poor or non-existent in some areas......please correct me if I am wrong as I only need a plain mobile for phone calls, nothing else!

As said 2G is being eliminated in Thailand so any new phone should be 3G or higher capable.  DTAC replaced my Nokia last year with a 3G phone free of charge when I would not do myself.

You can turn off smart functions and use modern phones as basically old type - once you get used to using touch screen.
