UK Radio 4 Extra - How To Listen To Online ?

Recommended Posts

I do not own an I-Pad or have anyway to download / listen to online certain BBC Radio 4 programs and any Radio 4 Extra programs.

Some programs from Radio 4 - such as In Our Time I can download or listen to online as a MP3 recording.

Other programs, mainly but not all, such as Farming Today nothing happens when I click listen now.

I understand that this is probably due to the UK licence fee or the recording is DAB.

Can anyone help with a suggestion for a way round this especially making downloading possible ?

This is what puzzles me.

What device do you have now to post in the forum?

I tried it on my desktop PC (no tricks involved) and can very well listen(!) to this program here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08vwncq

You can't?

It's indeed true that there is no provision to download on the site.

So unwanted/blocked.

And yes, other programs have a download button.

It is not appreciated in the forum to discuss workarounds/hacks to enable a download.

If someone has an idea please send a PM to the thread starter.

Just about all Radio 4 and 4 Extra programmes are available to listen to via the web (ie not geo-locked) but, as said, only a few are available as MP3 downloads. .

Certainly many episodes of farming today can be heard.

Note If you are running 'No Script' add on, depending on the things allowed,  you may hear only silence.

I just checked this (not a farmer myself!) and BBC lets you stream or download without any geolocation check. Farming is at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08x4rlj - just press the download button for any show works for me to get mp3 file?

Afaik you can stream any radio (but not TV) from the BBC web site without geolocation check. You can only stream 30 days and cannot download mp3 programs for shows that include copyright material such as music shows, so for that need other methods which are available.

Many thanks "WorriedNoodle"

I use a laptop.

The download app from BBC is not available in Thailand.

Yes, 'Farming Today' is available as a 30 day listen to.

Some programs but most are not downloadable, as you say due to copyright.

Some can / some can't be listened to, i.e when you click 'play' there is no sound.

Some are fully downloadable ( some MP3, some MP4 ) at anytime, i.e. not 30 day limit etc. example "In Our Time",

where there are more than 500 discussion programs on a very wide range of subjects.

Others only listen to at specific times - i.e. live.   These may be found later as a 30 day listen to.

Certain plays that have been on the BBC and old time comedy e.g Hancock are available on Youtube,

older ones still from various sites such as 'Oldtimeradio'.

At the end of the day the BBC still has a fantastic range of programs for us Anglophiles to enjoy.

You seem to be confused by how this works.

If you are using a Windows PC or laptop then you dont need any sort of app. Just open a browser and go to the BBC iPlayer website.

Almost all radio programmes from the last 30 days can be listened to on that site. A small number can also be downloaded as podcasts. Most programmes that can be downloaded have no time limit as the BBC owns the rights outright. Only a very few radio programmes are not available outside of the UK, and these are normally those with live sport commentary on R5.

If you are having trouble playing programme links on the BBC iPlayer website then try using another browser.

As well as above point, in your o/p you said "Other programs, mainly but not all, such as Farming Today nothing happens when I click listen now." but for me I cannot find this problem. All programs play sound. As KK said on previous post, perhaps try another browser to access the BBC web site?

I posted that I can listen to Farming Today which has a 30 day limit on it.

Some other programs when I click on Play Now do not play.

I have tried 2 browsers, will try 2 more.

Could you tell me if you have downloaded iPlayer from the BBC web site ?

No never used iPlayer app. I just used Firefox web browser to play or download, but all the web browsers work OK - I've tried Chrome, Edge, Opera on a Windows 10 PC.

For live BBC on Android I have used the third party TuneIn app but there are many apps to choose from. TuneIn is also on Samsung Smart TV app store so that streams live BBC radio as well.

There is also a third party app called get_iplayer for Windows available from Gitbub repository to download any BBC program.

Thanks"WorriedNoodle".

'Tunein', yes some good programs to listen to, both past and live.

Have heard 'get_iplayer' has a virus so I will steer clear of that one.

Have tried 2 other browsers, Slimjet and Comodo IceDragon similar problems as with Chrome, will give Firefox and Opera a try.

I don't have a TV, I use online to see TV series especially European and Nordic ones.

Again thanks for all your help.

Tunein has no support for BBC listen again, though it does have limited BBC podcast support.

I use get_iplayer daily and I have no qualms about it.

Try accessing the iPlayer site using Edge/IE.
