Hello all,

I have a Thai Drivers License but I do not have a drivers license in my own country.

Last year in May of 2016 I got an International Drivers License using my Thai License to use in my home country.

I am going back to my home country here in a few weeks.  Has my International Driver Permit expired?  I can't find any date on the document except when it was issued

I know in my own country they only last one year, but was curious if this one last longer?

Thanks

You don't say where your from if UK  your Thai 5 year DL is OK.

Compliments of @Soutpeel  post a while back, don't think much has changed.

Yes you can get an international driving permit ( no such thing as an international license) based on your Thai license, need the following:

A full 5 year Thai DL

Copy of your PP

2 X PP photos

THB 500 odd

I normally do mine at Mo Chit traffic department, typically in and out in 15 minutes and valid for 12 months

In Canada it depends on the territory. Mostly though it will be:

" If you have a valid licence from your home country, you will probably be able to use this to drive in Canada for a short period after you arrive. Check with your provincial or territorial government for details. "

From http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/newcomers/after-transportation-driving.asp.

For Ontario e.g. it says:

"

If you are visiting Ontario for less than 3 months and want to drive while you’re here, you can use a valid driver’s licence from your own province, state or country.

You will also need to:

  • be at least 16 years old
  • have proper insurance coverage for the vehicle you will drive
  • carry an original (or exact) copy of the vehicle ownership permit
  • obey traffic laws, drive safely and avoid collisions when you drive"

Thailand and Canada have a reciprocal agreement so you can use your Thai drivers license in Canada (for 3 or 6 months, cant remember which). I just used my Thai DL to rent a car in Canada too.  Note your International Drivers License you got in May 2016, expired in May 2017.

They seem to all be goos for one year from date of issue.

This page:

https://www.dlt.go.th/en/international-driving-licence/

says:

OR CAR AND MOTORCYCLE DRIVING LICENSE.

1.PASSPORT WITH NON – IMMIGRANT VISA : ORIGINAL AND PHOTO COPY
**NON QUOTA VISA ALIEN IDENTITY BOOK (RED BOOK) : ORIGINAL AND PHOTO COPY
2. RESIDENCE CERTIFICATE FROM EMBASSY , IMMIGRATION POLICE OFFICE, GOVERNMENT ORGANIZATION , INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION , WORK PERMIT OR CENSUS REGISTRATION (IN CASE OF THE ALIEN) : ORIGINAL AND PHOTO COPY
3. FIVE -YEARS THAI DRIVING LICENSE : CAR AND/OR MOTORCYCLE DRIVING LICENSE : ORIGINAL AND PHOTO COPY
4. PICTURES 2 PHOTOS 2 INCHES (NOT MORE THAN 6 MONTHS)
5. FEE : 505 BAHT
IF YOU DON’T COME BY YOURSELF : AUTHORISE LETTER WITH FEE STAMP 10 BATHS
*** INTERNATIONAL DRIVING LICENCE VALID FOR 1 YEAR.***

Has anyone ever done this by post?  Do you need to send your original passport and driver's license?

Do immigration offices still give out these, of course for a fee?

90 days to be precise but there are Exceptions to that:

The 90-day rule does not apply if:

  • you're visiting
  • you have a valid student exemption
  • you're a temporary foreign worker with a federal work permit designating you are in the Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP). Workers in the SAWP may drive for up to 12 months on a valid licence from their home jurisdiction.

IDP has validity of 12 mths, but only for use of 3mths continuously in a given country. If you leave the country and return, your 3mths recommences. Over 3mths with IDP would leave you without insurance, and treated as an unlicensed driver.. Unless, the country you are travelling to has a reciprocal arrangement where you can use your Thai full 5yr DL... for a given period of time.. A 2yr Temporary DL isn't valid for use outside of Thailand, or sufficient to enable you to obtain an IDP..

Official website, see link above, states 3 months.
