Sukhothai province told to install big bags to prevent possible flooding

The Royal Irrigation Department has warned Sukhothai provincial administration to brace for the arrival of water runoff from Phrae province, expected on Friday (July 21), by putting up big bags in the municipal area and at the Yom river embankment which is now under construction.

To spare Sukhothai from possible flooding, the Royal Irrigation Department deputy director-general Thongplew Kongchan said the department had worked out a water management plan by accelerating the discharge of water from the upstream of a water gate at Ban Hat Saphan Chan into Klong Yomnan, Saigao River and finally into the Nan river.

Besides, provincial irrigation offices have notified provincial officials in the Central Plains to warn residents living along rivers and klongs to be on the alert and to brace for possible flooding.

One would think that after some 3-4 years of built-up and extended construction on the Yom River in the central city area, things might be a little more stable as to the annual flooding that Sukhothai witnesses.

Not a chance......

In Amphoe Srisamrong, the community and provincial authorities have created more strategic klongs to off-set the upcountry water run-off.

Most of the high-water seems to be centered in Mueang and surrounding area........and south to Kirimat.

From what l saw New Sukhothai city river wall held up,  dunno about further down river though the worse time was some years back when a wall collapsed.

The water that came this time was not so much a torrent the level just rose to a high level.

Yeah - just slow high water, but flooding nonetheless - especially Mueang Sukhothai.

Hence, the reasoning behind the built up walls around the central area. But there is a catch when the Yom swells 10 fold - resulting in central city flooding.

What they need to do is create khlong outlets [upriver/downriver] to relieve the general flow and natural build-up to relieve any such central pressure [flooding] that may occur.
