I remember reading somewhere - I can't remember where: " The Euro is just the Deutschmark in drag"!

Well, there's some truth in that! The Euro is strong largely because of the Bundesbank and despite the dead weight of some Southern European economies.

Which is what makes those southern European countries uncompetitive. Much to Germany's advantage. Very clever construct the EU/Euro

Yes, there's some truth in that.

The attached reckons Germany has had an effective devaluation of 7.5% since the inception of the Euro.

However, the U.K. Has had a much greater devaluation. Why aren't we powering ahead?

The whole of Europe is a basket case economically. The UK is going to have to go thru a great deal more devaluation yet I would say, because society is in a mess and the society is a product of the countries politics. The idea that the government can "take care of you" has become a pandemic in Europe, with the EU being the ugliest outgrowth of that belief system. Socialism is still socialism no matter how anyone tries to dress it up. And socialism ultimately corrupts and fails. So bizarre that the USSR fell to bits and the EU wants to replicate the mistakes just a few decades later. When will they ever learn?

Why the USA? Because its equally out of whack in the opposite direction? It astounds me that people see a difference in the different forms of greed that manifest thru political beliefs, when in reality its all the same.

Which country do you think has a happy balance of prosperity and social justice? Denmark? Switzerland? Canada? Australia?

Good Question. As a general rule of thumb. The smaller the instruments of government the more prosperity, freedom of choice and social justice exists. Even if those things come by way of lack of access to "government" or lakc of "money" (which is just a government construct for controlling the means of exchange and stealing in most developed parts of the world).

At least people in those situations are left alone to fend for themselves and try and live as best they can without interference, and others "creaming off the top" all the time.  So from my perspective I simply don't agree in the premise of big government. So on the strength of that notion I'd look to smaller nations, to find a place where those things still even exist.

Well my favorite is Denmark. 5M population, big government, big taxes, big benefits, big happiness! Check it out!

I like Denmark, but is it sustainable? In the long run I doubt it. Most Danish People I know work for Maersk and as such don't pay taxes (or much if any) as they are merchant seamen. And so yes they are happy, not much government at sea!

will Scotland adopt the Euro when they (don't) leave the UK    ?

I think it will be a condition if you are even accepted or if it even exists by the time you have your 2nd leave referendum, I wish my next vote was whether to allow Scotland to remain in the UK and there are about 90% of the UK population that would like to vote on that one

OK TBH I would vote to allow you to stay but with conditions, free Grouse for the next 2 years and a one way flight for  Salmond and Sturgeon  to .............................
