Metropolitan Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) aims to increase the number of commuters using the Purple Line electric train from Tao Poon to Khlong Bang Phai station by four-fold to 80,000-100,000 a day in the middle of next year, said Thirapan Techasirinkul, advisor to the MRTA, said on Friday (Sept 1).

Currently, about 52,000 commuters are using the Purple Line train every week day and about 30,000 commuters on weekends since the opening of the one-station link between the Blue Line’s subway station at Bang Sue with the Tao Poon station of the Purple Line elevated train on Aug 12.

Before the opening of the link, an average of about 20,000 commuters use the Purple Line every day during weekdays and the number will slightly drop during the weekends.

Presumably many of the passengers are connecting to the old MRT but still no mention of adding cars to the original 3 car trains which are getting overcrowded. The BTS is getting 46 new cars next year so their trains should be 5 cars long.

400% increase in one year?

He had better hope not, for they of course will not actually plan for such.

If you have seen the pictures of deserted coaches with a handful of passengers in the past, you might find the goal not too ambitious
