SURIN — A dog has become the adoptive mother to a trio of kittens in Isaan, her owner said Wednesday.

Surin resident Chanyuth Srikeaw, said her dog “Kanomjeen” had begun mothering three kittens born two weeks ago at her family home. Chanyuth said the kittens’ mother had abandoned them after birth, prompting the dog to take them into her care.

This story brings back memories. My first wife once gave me a registered Beagle as a birthday present.  A couple of years later, she came home from work with a newborn kitten.  A couple a days before two co-workers had found a mother cat giving birth to a litter in a storage area inside a warehouse. The mother cat after birthing apparently while moving the newborn got locked out of the building and left one kitten behind. We hand-fed it formula we got from the vet using an eyedropper. The Beagle was very curious about this new addition so to be safe we keep the kitten in a separate room when we left the house. About 3 weeks later and when I returned home one day for lunch and for feeding it, I found the dog on the sofa and a wet ball of fur.  I feared it was dead but the dog had only been licking it clean. This kitten had triggered its mothering instincts and shortly after, the dog started lactating and nursing. The nursing continued well past normal weaning and I finally resorted to putting camphor on the dogs teats, which the kitten didn't like. I named the kitten Jeremiah, after the Robert Redford movie "Jeremiah Johnson", both survivors. Jeremiah was a special part of the family and left me with lasting memories. Due to bladder cancer, we put Jeremiah to rest 6 weeks before his 20th birthday.

Lovely story .

Do not listen to all the animal haters here on TV ... they are all ...holes ...
