Boy drowns in Udon Thani village pond

By The Nation

A boy drowned in a village pond in Udon Thani’s Ban Pue village on Sunday, police said.

The body of Chaturawit Inplaeng, 10, was found in the large pond in Moo 5 village at tambon Ban Pue, Ban Pue village, at dusk.

His father, Mana Inplaeng, 37, went looking for him after he failed to return home.

He found Mana’s sandals on the banks of the pond so he sought help from villagers to search for the body.

Chaturawit’s friends told police they swam in the pond and Chaturawit drowned.

They said they were frightened and went home without informing anyone for fear of being reprimanded.

Swimming classes were mandatory at the large international school I retired from. I was always amazed at the excuses many parents offered in order for their child to avoid getting in the pool. 'Bad spirits come on Wednesdays' or 'The Doctor said my son should never get wet.' My favorite was 'But, he does not know how to swim.'

I believe that swimming is perhaps the most important class that can be taught to young children. A student can flunk English, Math or Science and still reach adulthood. Swimming lessons should be mandatory for all students in Thailand.

Incredible, they didn,t tell anyone for fear of being reprimanded !! Something is seriously lacking in the raising of Thai children.

That's a bit harsh.

A similar thing happened to some friends of mine while jumping into flooded creeks, One guy got washed away and the others did a runner and didn't tell anyone. Fortunately a few kilometres downstream their mate managed to get himself out of the water.

Panic can have quite an effect on people...and not necessarily what we may call rational.

The serious lack in the raising of Thai - or any kid -, I think, is not teaching kids to swim. Mine started at 6 months old. So did my grandkids. Not saying they could be in the olympics but they learnt the basic to save themselves.
